Music News: Her 4th album underperfs her 3rd Britney Spears charged to the top of the nation’s album sales chart as her fourth Jive album, "In the Zone," went home with 609,000 buyers in the week ended Sunday, according to SoundScan.
Spears, seemingly never out of the news throughout the year, gave a hearty promotional push over the last month. She gave a surprise appearance in Las Vegas, appears on the covers of at least six magazines on newsstands and did several TV interviews. However, while her numbers were strong, she did not top first-week sales for her last disc, "Britney," which sold 746,000 copies in November 2001.
A similar fate beset Blink-182, whose self-titled Geffen disc sold 313,000 units, 37,000 fewer copies than they sold of "Take off Your Pants and Jacket." Sales were good enough for the No. 3 slot, trailing the 50 Cent-led G-Unit’s "Beg for Mercy" (Interscope), which posted extremely strong sales of 327,000 in its second week.
The Beatles’ "Let It Be ... Naked" (Capitol), which features the tracks from the Fab Four’s final release without the touches of producer Phil Spector, sold 280,000 copies to land at No. 5. Rhino’s "Concert for George," meanwhile, sold almost 20,000 units in its debut week.
With slots six through 12 occupied by members of the previous week’s top 11 class -- Outkast’s "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" (LaFace) was the one disc to post a sales increase, rising 7,5000 units to 145,000 -- eight new releases landed between 13 and 25.
Biggest surprise may well be Michael Jackson, whose "Number Ones" (Epic) was released the day an arrest warrant was issued for him on charges of child molestation. Jacko’s hits collection, modeled on previously successful compilations by the Beatles and Elvis Presley, sold 121,000 copies to land at 13.
One slot down was the Dave Matthews Band’s "Central Park Concert" (RCA), which sold 110,000.
The attempt to rush the release of Korn’s "Take a Look in the Mirror" hit distribution snags as the Epic disc sold 96,000 copies over the weekend. Album was released Fridayinstead of originally set Tuesday to stymie some of the piracy.
Greatest-hits collections from Warners act the Red Hot Chili Peppers, LeAnn Rimes (Curb) and Tori Amos (Atlantic) did 92,000, 82,000 and 47,000, respectively.
The Chilis were followed at No. 22 by 112’s "Hot & Wet" (Def Jam); labelmates Linkin Park’s "Live in Texas" at 90,000; Rimes; and Reba McEntire’s "Room to Breathe" (MCA Nashville), which posted sales of 73,000.
Two veteran acts returning to the recording fold posted reasonable sales last week. Cyndi Lauper’s collection of covers, "At Last" (Epic) -- her first nonholiday album in six years -- sold 47,000 copies. Al Green, whose well-reviewed "I Can’t Stop" is his first secular album since 1995, sold 34,000 units. Green is the second reclamation project for the venerable jazz label Blue Note: Diskery in late October released Van Morrison’s "What’s Wrong With This Picture," which has now sold 111,000 copies.
Sixteen of the 35 albums in the top 50 that were on the chart last week posted sales increases. Among those spiking were albums by Clay Aiken, Alan Jackson, Hilary Duff, Chingy, Norah Jones, Sting, Martina McBride and holiday efforts from the "American Idol" contestants and Harry Connick Jr.
Last week’s top albums, though, Jay-Z’s "Black Album" (Def Jam) and 2Pac’s "Resurrection" (Interscope), saw steep slides. "Black Album," at No. 4, sold 288,000 copies, and "Resurrection," the No. 7 disc, moved 180,000.
