The Kingblind Top 100 Essential Records of all time (Week 7 of 10)
Ok, Here are the rules... Kingblind get their writers and friends to pick 10 records that are essential to their collection. (Kingblind will post in blocks of 10 until 100 is reached) 1. If someone else has one of the records in their selection you CANNOT pick it. Find another gem for the list.. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED! 2. Here is what is NOT allowed in the Top 100 (We are assuming that our fine readers are smart enough to have these records in their collection already.) NO Beatles, Beach Boys, Stones, Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Who, Stooges, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth, Dylan, Nirvana. Obviously the point of this is to turn you fine folks onto some great music that you might not have heard before. Every week (on Monday) we will add a new chunk from a new writer until 100 is reached. ENJOY!!
Please welcome our 7th week of selections (70 of 100) from Mr. Sal Nunziato (NYC, NY)
AEROSMITH- ROCKS: Before they discovered sobriety, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry had no idea what an over-produced, power-ballad sounded like. This is one the greatest rock n roll albums of all time.
TELEVISION- MARQUEE MOON: The twin guitar attack of Tom Verlaine & Richard Lloyd, coupled with the "James Brown meets Tommy Ramone" rhythm section equals one of the most unique and thoroughly satisfying debuts in music history.
JAMES BOOKER- CLASSIFIED: Some know and some don’t! For those who don’t, James Booker is arguably the greatest piano player who ever lived. A true New Orleanian, if there ever was one, he managed to keep himself out of jail by teaching the D.A.’s son how to play piano. (the D.A. was Harry Connick Sr.) This is the most heartbreaking blues recording I have ever heard. I can’t play piano, but if I could, I could NEVER play the shit on this record!
David Bowie- STATION TO STATION: It’s easy to pick "Ziggy Stardust" as the quintessential Bowie record. But, as great as Ziggy is, I’m a bit tired of it. On the other hand, in almost 30 years, I have never tired of this underrated masterpiece. "Ziggy meets Marvin Gaye."
FACES- OOH LA LA: To many die-hard Faces fans, this last release was their weakest. But to this die-hard Faces fan, it was their strongest. Better than any post-Exile Stones record! Also a painful reminder that at one time, Rod Stewart was a rock n roll icon, instead of a third rate Jack Jones.
PRINCE- DIRTY MIND: Cutting edge punk/funk! Prince was the man! Many artists have tried to recreate this ever-so-slightly dated electronic tour de force. No one has succeeded.
RASCALS- TIME/PEACE : What can I say about the greatest band to ever come out of New York City. You name it, they played it!. 60’s R&B was never better. And, oh those amazing hit singles!
TODD RUNDGREN- SOMETHING/ANYTHING? Power pop, blue-eyed Philly soul, psychedelia, and blues. All created by one madman from Philadelphia. Two LPs of pure musical bliss.
KEITH RICHARDS- TALK IS CHEAP: Not the Stones, so it should qualify. This really is the best Stones album.
THE BAND- S/T (2ND ALBUM) Another record that gets better and better with each listen. "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" could give James Brown a run for his money in the funk department.
Sal Nunziato was born and raised in NYC, but is moments away from relocating to New Orleans. He was a drummer in a local NY band from 1978-1988, and used all his earnings to buy a sandwich. He is currently the owner of NYCD, the coolest indie record store on the Eastern Seaboard, and a music writer. Most of his work can be read as liner notes for hundreds of major label releases. Since becoming a writer and opening NYCD in 1993, he has used all his earnings to buy a sandwich. http://www.nycd-online.com It’s well known that Mr. Ray Davies (The Kinks) loves to visit NYCD when he is in town.. And hell, you should too.
