The Kingblind Top 100 Essential Records of all time (Week 9 of 10)
Ok, Here are the rules... Kingblind get their writers and friends to pick 10 records that are essential to their collection. (Kingblind will post in blocks of 10 until 100 is reached) 1. If someone else has one of the records in their selection you CANNOT pick it. Find another gem for the list.. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED! 2. Here is what is NOT allowed in the Top 100 (We are assuming that our fine readers are smart enough to have these records in their collection already.) NO Beatles, Beach Boys, Stones, Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Who, Stooges, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth, Dylan, Nirvana. Obviously the point of this is to turn you fine folks onto some great music that you might not have heard before. Every week (on Monday) we will add a new chunk from a new writer until 100 is reached. ENJOY!!
Please welcome our 9th week of selections (90 of 100) from Mr. Andy Patterson aka Droo (Atlanta, GA via Detroit, MI)
Widespread Panic-Space Wrangler Debut album on Landslide records. From day one this has been a favorite, ever since my visit to Atlanta 20 years ago, good old southern rock from a little bar band from Athens, GA you now know them as one of the biggest touring bands in the land and I still want more!! Bob Marley & The Wailers-Catch A Fire Catch a Fire was the major label debut for Bob Marley & the Wailers, and it was an international success upon its release in 1973. Although Bob Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound. All the songs were originals, and the instrumentation was minimalistic in order to bring out the passionate, often politically charged lyrics. Much of the appeal of the album lies in its sincerity and sense of purpose these are streetwise yet disarmingly idealistic young men who look around themselves and believe they might help change the world through music. Marley sings about the current state of urban poverty ("Concrete Jungle") and connects the present to past injustices ("Slave Driver"), but he is a not a one-trick pony. He is a versatile songwriter who also excels at singing love songs such as his classic "Stir It Up." Peter Tosh sings the lead vocal on two of his own compositions Ëœ his powerful presence and immense talent hint that he would eventually leave for his own successful solo career. More than anything else, however, this marks the emergence of Bob Marley and the international debut of reggae music. Marley would continue to achieve great critical and commercial success during the 1970s, but Catch a Fire is one of the finest reggae albums ever. This album is essential for any music collection! Minutemen-Double Nickels On The Dime Discovered this album skipping class in 11th grade with Dave Buick- Detroit icon and owner of Italy Records and Young Soul Rebels record shop check it out! ( www.italyrecords.com) On our way back from Denny’s we listened to this amazing album,44 songs of all kinds of stuff, punk, jazz, spanish, blues covers of van halen , ccr, and steely dan, very amusing, I was hooked! one of the best records of the 80’s fo sho! Son Volt- Trace Hard to believe this album is almost 10 years old, first band I saw while I worked for the Majestic Theatre Complex in Detroit this record is gritty but sweet thought it was better than the first Wilco record after the Uncle Tupelo split! I could listen to this everyday! Urge Overkill -Saturation The first record I bought after returning home from my summer in Vail, Colorado. It’s stadium rock by post-punkers who are smart enough to not let their carefully crafted image interfere with the music. Few bands ever lusted after rock stardom quite as blatantly as Chicago’s Urge Overkill!! Boy I wish I could see them again! Ween- White Pepper Some Think I’ve always been a ween fan , when actually not until this record , which Cooper Sanchez made me listen to! It really covers a lot of ground, then I back tracked into the previous albums, amazing, hilarious! There one of my favs!! David Bowie-Honky Dory Really the first David bowie record I enjoyed listening to, although I would usually skip changes because I’d heard that song so much! It’s a return to the singer songwriter David Bowie, less heavy metal, less guitar more piano Really got me interested, I now own all his records, thanks Pat Hill! Nebula-Let it burn Guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruban Romano formed Nebula in 1997 after breaking away from desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu, eventually recruiting bassist Mark Abshire. This power trio specializes in feedback-drenched heavy rock, incorporating liberal doses of Black Sabbath riffery, psychedelia, and space rock. If you are a fan of the genre, or just Fu Manchu, then put down your bong and Black Sabbath vinyl long enough to go out and find yourself this masterpiece! These guys are amazing straight ahead power trio, just blows my mind! Got get any of it!! Gang Star- Step in the area Never overly prolific nor overly popular, Gang Starr nonetheless became and remain one of hip-hop’s most admired acts ever, the duo’s legacy nothing short of legendary in terms of influence. Dj Premier and Guru, the duo’s respective producer/DJ and lyricist/MC, set standards for early-’90s hip-hop! First heard them on the Brand New Heavys first effort, it stuck, but didn’t here this record till late night in Detroit in 1995 This is amazing stuff, like all the other records I own I snatched up all the material on these guys! Dig! J. Geils Band- Full House Live The J. Geils Band was one of the most popular touring rock & roll bands in America during the ’70s. Where their contemporaries were influenced by the heavy boogie of British blues-rock and the ear-splitting sonic adventures of psychedelia, the J. Geils Band were a bar band pure and simple, churning out greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes, cutting them with healthy dose of Stonsey swagger! Live is the way the J. Geils Band should be experienced; they put on a show like few others, and Full House is the proof. From start to finish, there is not one bad cut. From the opener, "First I Look at the Purse" right on through "Looking for a Love," these guys don’t give up an inch! I used to think these guys were from Detroit, But they are from Boston, but boy were they popular in the Dtown!
This weeks lists hails from Mr. droo! Some may know him as the biggest vegetarian in the world, others big Andy from Detroit, who now lives in the Atl. He moved here in 1999 after working 5 long years at the Majestic Theater Complex, which includes the oldest bowling alley in America, the Garden Bowl, the Majestic Cafe and Theater and the Magic Stick !! www.majesticdetroit.com He now tends bar at the world famous Echo Lounge in Atlanta, GA and loves it! During the day he takes care of his 4 month old daughter Campbell Lily Star and loves it! He’s seen a lot of great bands in his time and being only 30 he’ll see a lot more! Spending time with Campbell during the day lets him listen to some of his 5 thousand cd’s and record’s that he’s slowly unpacking from a recent move. These records mean a lot to me, but there are so many more as well. I appreciate Kingblind giving me a chance for my voice to be heard Happy listening, you haven’t heard the last of me!
