Variety - Debut feature by thesp-turned-helmer Liberto Rabal, son of Paco Rabal, "Syndrome" reps a fetid, decidedly un-PC story of a stalker who kidnaps, incarcerates and rapes his ex-g.f. until she falls in love with him again. Imagine Pedro Almodovar's "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" but without the laughs, a lot less brains, but pretension to spare. (Helmer, in fact, co-starred in Almodovar's "Live Flesh.") Pic is sure to attract defenders, especially among lovers of such shock tacticians as Catherine Breillat and Gaspar Noe. However, grubby digital look and controversial, explicit content could spell sickly prospects for "Syndrome" beyond fests.
