After much deliberation about what to write an egg about, I’ve decided to make a leg egg! This is the story of how I smashed my leg into so many fragments the doctors couldn’t even begin to count them. It’s definately caused mayhem, and I’ve been getting to explore a lot of hospitals, so I thought I’d share the story. Enjoy....
On August 12th 2008, I was out on my motorbike.
Random video of me on my bike.
I’d just came back from a 500 mile weekend away to watch the superbikes racing, and while I was there I shelled out for a nice new helmet. I only got to wear that helmet for 3 days before it got fucked up.
It was a Tuesday evening, about 9:30pm, and I decided to go out for a little spin on the bike. Typically, as soon as I got out of town it started raining. It didn’t last too long but was enough get the roads all nice and wet and slippery. I knew I couldn’t get a proper hardcore ride so I decided just to turn and go home. About a mile and a half outside the town, I came to one of my favourite bends, a tight left hander. As I took the band the bike just wiped out in a split second, with no warning. Before I knew what was happening I was sliding along with my bike on top of my left leg, then I was sliding backwards on my face and my visor got ripped off by the road, and loads of gravel shit from the road came in, getting in my mouth and eyes. Then as quickly as it had happened, I stopped sliding. I’d hit the crash barrier, though I didn’t quite realise this till later. I stopped half on the road, and half on the grass at the side of the road.I tried to move straight away, totally forgetting about the 10 second count-down to collect your thoughts and check for pain/breakages. I realised straight away that my leg was broken. When I tried to lift it, everything from the bottom of my shin down just flopped, as if I had another knee just above my ankle. I could also feel the horrible grinding of the bones inside.
About an hour and a half later, after a massive crowd of onlookers, 2 ambulances, a whole bottle of gas stuff, some morphine, and having my leg forced straight and strapped in position, I was blue-lighted to the small hospital about 40 miles from where I live. There my leg was put in a cast, x-rayed, and deemed to be pretty fucked up. I had broken my leg, and totally mushed up the bottom part of the bigger leg bone. (I don’t have a copy of these x-rays but you’ll see what I mean a bit further on.)
I spent the night there and the next morning I got a cool helicopter ride!
The actual helicopter I was flown in.
This part was the best bit of the whole experience I think, but the pain got unbearable again so I got some more of that awesome gas to keep me going till I could get more morphine. It was great, like being high or something.
They flew me to a much bigger and more suitable hospital, where the doctor said my leg resembled a Cadbury’s Crunchie bar that had been hit my a sledgehammer. Yikes! I was “nil by mouth” (not allowed to eat OR drink) for pretty much 3 days until I got operated on:
(I wasn’t really that happy, the smile was forced.)
In surgery they pulled my leg out to near enough it’s correct length (I had obviously hit the crash barrier foot first, which snapped my leg and forced the bits below the break UP into my leg, so the bones were overlapping).
They fitted a metal frame to hold everything in place.
After a few more days I got the bandages removed.
See how swollen it is?
And in case you’re wondering, yes, the top bit is screwed into my leg, and the bottom bits go right through my foot.
3 Metal rods screwed into my shin.
View of the sole of my heel and foot.
Pins entering the right side of my heel, plus leakage.
Same side after a cleaning.
After about 9 full days stuck in bed, not allowed to move my leg at all, I was finally allowed to stand and take my first steps on crutches.
Video of my first steps.
The physio nurse on my left was a bit of allright, if you know what I mean!
After my broken leg being elevated for so long, even just taking it from the bed and hanging it over the side of the bed was pretty hellish. All the blood rushing into the foot at once, not a nice feeling.
So I did a little bit of walking, and the next day I tackled the stairs, and was finally told I could go home. They didn’t fly me home unfortunately, so I had a 3.5 hour car journey!
I had to go back a few weeks later just to get it checked and have some more x-rays taken. This is what it looked like (taken 9th Sept, nearly a month after the accident):
I took this picture a few days later (15th Sept), just to show how badly bruised my foot still was:
I was referred to a bone trauma specialist in Edinburgh because my leg was too fucked for them to do anything with at the first 2 hospitals. The metal frame they put on at the 2nd hospital was just to hold everything in place, and to let the swelling go down before my next operation.
I went to Edinburgh on the 14th Oct, expecting to be kept in for surgery, but after taking some x-rays, the doc said he wanted to wait another 4 weeks. This was because the mushed bit still hadn’t quite healed enough for him to be able to work with it. He did, however, unbolt the bars that go between my foot and shin, and forced my foot up into my leg by about a centimetre. No painkillers, so that was pretty fucking painful! So when I left the hospital that day my leg was 1cm shorter than it had been it had been when I went in. Weird.
Here’s some of the x-rays they took there.
After this aggravation of my leg, I could hardly move it without extreme, sharp pain, and at times it would just randomly piss blood from the pin-sites when I stood up to go to the bathroom.
Here’s a pic to show how it was still bruised over 2 months after the accident.
This pic was taken on 17th Oct.
I still don’t have proper feeling back in my foot, and still cant move my toes properly, but it’s improving, very very slowly.
I should hopefully be going into hospital in about 10 days for my next operation, but I haven’t actually got a date for it yet.
During my next hospital stint, they are going to take a bone graft from my hip, and place it into my leg to bring the length out so that it is close to the length of my other leg. They also need to cut away some bone on the top of the ankle and the bottom of the ankle socket, and will fit a bigger frame, known as an Ilizarov frame. An example is shown below
This will fuse my ankle, so I will never be able to move it again. While wearing the frame the ankle and the socket will knit together and become one bone, doing away with the movement offered by the socket. I might also have to tighten screws on this frame every day to stretch my leg bones a little bit to get the length to match properly.
A better look at the pins that go right through the leg and out the other side:
At first I was told I would have that frame on for 6 months, then I was told 3 months, but the specialist at Edinburgh told me I’d have it on for around 9 months. He said that I should be finished my treatments by August 09, a full year after the accident. It’s not even been a full 3 months yet, but it feels like a lifetime. I can tell the next 9 months are gunna drag.
There are only 2 good things to come out of this whole situation.
1.- My friends bought me an X-Box 360 to keep me occupied!
2.- It brought me back to RE, because I now have so much free time on my hands!
So that’s my story so far, I hope you found it interesting! I’ll let you all know how I get on after my next surgery.
Nov 01, 2008 12:26 pm - i have a pretty bad injury, that took place sometime last year. I still got the bad ass pics and an essay i wrote for school about it. ill make an egg if anyone is interested, something i havent done in years.
Nov 01, 2008 12:56 pm - Thanks for all the comments guys!
Oops, I did have a little warning at the top about the images, but I must have deleted it when I changed the introduction, and forgot to put it back in!
Nov 01, 2008 1:36 pm - So the only reason you came back to us was because you were bedridden? We luff you too. :-P
5* Quite the story... Hope you recover quickly (but stay on RE)!
You plan on riding again?
Nov 01, 2008 5:29 pm - Thanks for all the fives guys! :D
Looks like people have been rating it down though, If you’re gunna rate low please comment and let me know why! That way I can try and do better in future.
Chronc, I tried to message you but it wouldn’t let me, but yeah, it would be interesting to read your story.
And Dodge... lol. :P Yeah, I guess you could say that. But I had been thinking about RE before, and checked in once or twice but didnt sign in or post. It’s just that life was so busy before, I didnt have time for RE. But now I’m bedridde, it’s the perfect opportunity to get re-aquainted with y’all. And no, I don’t think I’ll be getting on a bike again. :-( Each time I crash it gets worse - the time before this one I ploughed through a sheep at 100mph. I did brea my foot but it was nothing too major. I might end up dying next time, so it aint worth the risk.
So on the bright side I should always have time for RE now! :D
Nov 02, 2008 1:57 am - Damn, you look pretty young. So that second frame you get is going to fuse your ankle bone and your leg bone so you can never bend your ankle again? Man, that sucks.
Nov 02, 2008 5:16 am - lol, no problem h-dogg. You reminded me of a joke I thought i might try out in hospital. Mumble to the nurse "Are my testicles black?" and once she’s had a look at them and had a good check all around with her hands, smile and say "that was lovely, but I think you mis-heard me... I said are my test results back?" lol
DamnBastard, yup, I’m 19, and I’ll never be able to move my ankle again. And I’ll probably need more surgery in my foot when I get to about 40, because I’ll get really bad arthritis in the other joints in my foot. I dont even think I’ll be able to run properly once I’m back on my feet. It really does suck.
Nov 03, 2008 3:19 pm - Fuck that fuck that fuck that Ahhh Wtf lol Ahhhh fuck that fuck that Thats fucked up!
5* cause i dont wanna have to read this to find out what its about
Nov 03, 2008 6:56 pm - 5*s Great egg and pics. Is there any way to avoid fusing your ankle? I couldn’t deal with not being able to move my foot. P.S. As much as it sucks you know that the scars will get you laid.
I finally got a date for my next surgery, I’m due in hospital on 9th of December and it seems they plan on doing the operation that day. I’ll prob be in for a few days recovering before they let me out. I’ll let you all know how it goes.
Lets just say the bike is in better shape than me! lol. It needs a few new bits and pieces (back wheel, exhaust, rear plastics, engine casing) and a bloody good clean!
Feb 23, 2009 5:28 pm - ^^It’s so low because there are people who rate stuff down just for the hell of it. Especially if they are in the top 10 on the site stats page (which this, and my next 2, were).
