Ok, so here is the promised and long awaited sequel to my previous leg egg!
Warning: Not dial-up friendly!
I will outline the story briefly(ish) first and then there will be pictures! Warning The pictures are pretty gross so don’t scroll down if that kinda thing makes you sick! You have been warned.
Ok, so as we left it I was waiting to be taken in for surgery. As you may know from my posts in the General Discussion, I got my date, but the hospital messed up, and I had to go down early, with barely any notice. They said they would have a bed on the ward for me when I arrived at the hospital in the evening after a 250 mile trip. But when we finally got there..... No bed!
So after a lot of hanging around they put me into a surgical day care ward, which is basically just full of beds for people who are in and out in a day or two. They had no tv’s at the beds, nothing to keep me entertained. It was shit. And to make it worse, they had lost my notes too! So allthough I told them I wasn’t going into surgery until the next day, they weren’t sure I was right as they couldn’t check the notes, so they wouldn’t let me eat or drink incase I was due to go for surgery!
My doctor came to see me the day before my surgery, and he gave me a lot of new info. He said that they had changed my surgeon, so it wouldn’t be the guy I had spoken to before. They had also cut a couple of the major parts from my operation, which was quite surprising but also good news. They had decided to just heal the broken bits and see how it goes from there, without having to fuse my ankle. I had been preparing myself for 4 months for getting my ankle fused, and never being able to use it again, so I was a bit pissed off that I had been worrying needlessly for 4 months. They had also decided not to take a bone graft from my hip to lengthen my leg. They managed to get it near enough to the right size, and if it needs lengthened, they can do that later on in the process.
They don’t know how long I might get out of my ankle, it could be a few years, 5, maybe even 10. Or it could not work out as hoped and I’d need to get it fused straight away. But it’s worth seeing what I can get out of it, so I’m happy!
I’m still due to have this frame on my leg for about 9 months. But after 3 months, they will take off the section of frame that has the pins going through my foot and heel. I will be able to move my ankle! Which is going to be wierd, that’ll be about 7 months I’ve not moved my ankle. But then maybe I can start learning to walk properly again.
I am able to put a little bit of weight through the leg now, not much, but Im working at it. Because my foot is bolted in position I can’t really walk that way, but it is good to stand on my two feet, and apparently it helps stimulate growth of the bone.
Ok, I’m kind of rambling here, this is turning out a bit less brief than planned!
Last bit of info, while I was in surgery they discovered an infection in my leg, which had to be treated with a course of intravenous antibiotics. This meant I had to spend an extra 2 weeks in the hospital on an I.V drip! I got out just in time for christmas thankfully, they let me out 2 days early.
Ok, here are the pictures, the main thing you came to see!
They had to draw an arrow to make sure they operated on the correct leg. Srsly!

I was planning on making this the very last Egg of the year, but I didn’t give myself enough time, so I think it’ll have to be the very first egg of the year instead. Happy New Year everyone, from that spaced out looking guy up there! Hope you have a good 2009!

I’ll have this one on for about 9 months, which sucs. But after 3 months they’ll take off the bit that is holding my foot in position, and I will be able to start moving my ankle! Didn’t thin I was ever going to be able to do that again so thats great.
I should get normal use out of it for a while, maybe a few years, so I should be able to run. But they will have to fuse the ankle at some point, I don’t think I’ll really be able to run after that.
Thanfully the medical treatment and surgeries wont cost me a thing, thanks to Britains Natonal Health Service (NHS). Everyone here gets a percentage taken off their wages for "National Insurance" which is used for the NHS. I am losing money from work though, I’m on half pay now, but at least I dont have to worry about a massive medical bill.
Thanks for the avatar dodge! Im soo gonna use that!
The story behind the smiley is this: A nurse carelessly left an empty syringe behind after she’d been sorting out my antibiotic drip. I had this thing taped into my vein which the drip goes in (and blood can come out!) So I decided to try and take some of my own blood just for the hell of it. I then drew the smiley on a tissue using the syringe, thining of how you guys at RE would appreciate it!
And if you guys are lucky I will show you that pic (and some others!) of my ex at some point.
