Date: 98-02-09 04:34:48 EST From: Anna_Spackman@chs.co.uk Hi all thankyou so much for all your get well soon messages and cards by the time this appears I will have replied to you all personally!!!! OK so what happened was, I was changing the coffee in the perculator and someone had filled it up too far just before and had turned it off or something, I don't know what they did but it meant that when I pulled the coffee stuff out it was over filled and spilled all over my right hand. This happened eight days ago and I have just started typing right handed again and I can only just hold a pencil!! I had a couple of days off but now am back in work, but I can only work morning because the pain killers are so strong that's all I can do. I have had to come into work, unfortunately as I am an office temp, in a long term booking, I've been here 6 months, and I would normally only get paid for my hours worked. But as the accident happened here they said if I come in mornings they will pay me for the afternoons. I won't go into details about what my peace-sign-making fingers on my right hand look like - they are not for the weak hearted! Anyway, the painkiller are numbing my brain so if I'm not Making much sense you know why!! Thanks again!!! OH YEAH btw here is the reason I wanted this posted on February 9th A special message for a dear friend: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAREST ANTHONY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! ANTMAN: Your books are in the post!!! Happy B-day - don't worry I won't disclose your age!!!! LOL Thanks again everyone!!! Michelle ______________________________________________________________ Subj: VERY IMPORTANT Date: 98-02-09 13:08:08 EST From: nicoyrafa@hotmail.com (Nicolás Colombino) Michelle, this is importan for me. I would appreciate it if you could post this quickly on the newsletter. Dear SKEMERs, (Nicolás here, or Nico, as Michelle calls me) I am asking for some advice here. Last Saturday was my brithday (I'm 19 now). I didn't get much presents, for I could not make a party. (Although I will do it sometime in march, its just that everybody is studying for exams and not half of my friend would have been able to come). Anyway, one whom I consider one of my best friends (GOD, I'D LOVE SHE WAS MORE THAN A FRIEND, SHE'S SO PRETTY) gave me Thinner as a present. She new it was difficult for her to choose one which I hadn't read (she's not a SK fan), so she told me: "I just bought one, but you may go to the bookstore and change it if you have already read it". In fact, I had read it. It was my second SK book. So when I left her home I went directly to the bookstore in a shopping center and changed it for Skeleton Crew. I have already read the other two short story compilations and was missing this one, so I chose it. All the other books that were there I had read them, except for Cujo, but I considered another novel would be a lot. (I'm still have Needful Things in my bookshelf waiting to be read). The reason why I'm posting and made this message important is that I think maybe I should have chosen 'Salem's Lot. Although I have read it, I did it in spanish, which is not the same (I always say that reading a book not in its original language is like listening the best songs by the Rolling Stones but covered by some other amateur group), and all the rest of my SK books are in english, but my favourite one is missing in the collection. It really doesn't mach in the spanish edition: it is taller, etc. etc. Now I'm thinking that maybe I could go again and get my favourite SK book in an edition that maches all the others (and also I was planning to read it again), but that would mean give away one that seems to be a very good short story compilation and the one that everybody is reading now, if I stayed wiht it I could keep up with the discussions that are taking place now. WHAT DO YOU, MY DEAR FELLOW SKEMERS RECOMMEND?? Should I wait for getting 'Salem's Lot and keep SCrew or should I give away Skeleton Crew and get 'SL right now???? Sorry I got too long but I needed advice from my SKEMER friends. I made it important because I can't wait too many days for going back to the bookstore. ĦĦĦĦI'll be waiting for your answers!!!!!!! ______________________________________________________________ Well, happy birthday! That's a hard choice. Skeleton Crew is the best short story compilation but if you're into vampires go with 'Salem's Lot. Not an easy decision. I'd just say go with what you got. It has never appeared on TV. I don't watch the show so I haven't checked it out. It was in a magazine called the Web. Have any of you heard the song Misery Loves Company by Anthrax? It was a very good read even if it was only 320 pages long. Every one of his books have a comment from SK on the cover - guess that caught my eye also. In reply to Mark Constant Reader ****************DTIV SPOILERS ************* You know, it is so interesting that King made Roland and Susan 14. I think he did that on purpose--and for the same reason Shakespeare made Juliet 13 and Romeo somewhere around 15. They were too young, things moved too fast, and that kind of love can't last in its pure form. But it was necessary to help Roland "become a man." After his fight against Cort, he was supposed to be a man, but he wasn't. That happened too fast, too. That's why his dad sent him away--to grow up. That's exactly what happened. ******************************************* ****************Stand Spoilers************* About the overseas thing. Are any of you snowed in? Fred: All is forgiven, sorry for the misunderstanding. I was one of those who might have come down a bit hard on you and I'm sorry. Everyone: I've been reading Nightmares & Dreamscapes and in 2 of the stories, Dolan's Cadillac and Suffer the Children, there are references to the 'third grade'. In Dolan's, the main character teaches third grade and the teacher in Suffer also teaches third grade. Brings that theory about King maybe having a bad experience in school a little more into the light. Narrows it down to third grade maybe? Heather: 'Violin' is an excellent novel, but, if you haven't read Anne Rice before, you might be thrown off by it. I suggest 'Interview with the Vampire' first, then maybe ease into 'Violin'. Linny: WELCOME BACK!!! You were missed very much. Sam: I'd love to have one of the bumper stickers, could you email me with the info? Cost, shipping, etc. mekare@newwave.net Guess that's it for now. What I was curious about was Mccammons Swan Song. Now somebody previously mentioned that any book that is set in post apocolyptic time would mirror the Stand. However, as much as I loved Swan Song (and I loved it) I think Mr. Mccammon really "borrowed" to many ideas from King. I mean the most obvious is when the main characters , like in the stand, are going into the tunnel in New York and crawling over the dead bodies. Surely he could have come up with something more original. I have also notice books that Kootnz has done that again, have almost seem plagirous (I doubt if I have spelled that right.) I realize that writers have an artistic liscence to "borrow ideas". Hell, even Shakespear did it. But I just wonder what kind of laws are involved. I mean there were parts in Swan Song where I could have sworn I was reading the Stand. Can"t an author protect his work when stuff like this happens? Maybe someone can answer this for me. On another topic, I am looking forward to the X-Files this week. Even if it isn't King's original work. And I am not even a X-Files fan! Mischief ______________________________________________________________ I don't know what constitutes plagerisim (sp). Does anyone know about this? Michelle ______________________________________________________________ Subj: Re: totally OT..I knew I shouldn't have gotten started Date: 98-02-04 22:58:33 EST From: TwinAndOne Hi Bobbie Jo! Nice to see ya here :)) DiAnne & Brett - As far as the drug situation goes, I have lots of proof to back up my assertions and many personal experiences with myself and with friends. No one will ever be able to convince me that keeping drugs illegal and misinforming the public about their true dangers is a good thing. I've had a lot of experience with a lot of drugs in the past and to be perfectly honest, the only one that's ever caused me any serious problems is alcohol and it's perfectly legal. I also smoke, and that's been the hardest to kick, but at this point I'm not feeling the ill effects. That still makes it quite a bit more dangerous than your average illegal drug if for no other reason than the damage it inflicts is a slow and silent process. The problem with being against illegal drugs without having tried them is that you only know what you've been told and most of that is by people who intend to keep the drugs illegal. Can we say biased? The thing is, when most people do try drugs they realize that they've been lied to and that's why so many younger people get into trouble. They don't know what was a lie and what was the truth because they were so misinformed so they assume everything is a lie and take things too far. Had they been told the truth fromthe beginning, this wouldn't happen, or at least not as often. On the other side of the coin, when you make something illegal, kids will try it out of curiosity and a sense of rebellion. We're making legend out of these drugs simply by making them unavailable. So many people love to try things they're not "supposed" to. So let's tell our kids the whole truth and make sure they know that the anti-drug lobby is screwing up by not telling people what they really need to know. I mean really, shouldn't we be able to decide for ourselves? That's what this country was founded on. If everyone knows the actual (meaning not the ones the progaganda tries to make you believe) dangers of the drugs they can make an informed choice. Most of these drugs weren't even illegal until this century and the reasons they became illegal had very little to do with the danger that may or may not be caused by their use. I won't even get into how much of our money, as taxpayers, we're shelling out to keep these non-dangerous criminals in jail. That in itself is a crime. A really interesting book to read is Nobody's Business If I Do by Peter McWilliams. It talks about all sorts of consensual crimes; why they became illegal, why they shouldn't be illegal, and how they really don't hurt anyone besides the person who practices them. You can read it online at http://www.mcwilliams.com/books/aint/f01.htm or buy it at your local bookstore. Everything in the book can be backed up by public sources of information. it's really quite enlightening. The only problem with the online version of the book is that there are some parts of paragraphs missing where it seems it was not scanned correctly or something. I'm probably just rambling now so I'll leave you to read, if you desire, or to curse my name. hee hee Jill ______________________________________________________________ I can see your point and if done right, I think it could work but it's hard when you've had a loved one die of a heroin overdose. He has redone it and I must say that it's really looking great. Look extra close at the logotype on his page, I think it's sooo great! GO THERE NOW! Michelle: I really DID a typo, I hade even done it at my homepage. I can really see the humour in it. There IS a BIG differense between "March" and "Mars". Mars is the swedish name on March. Debby B: King was exposed as Bachman by a bookstore worker (I think). I hade a whole article on my Bachman page earlier (then I redid it and removed that part) like Michelle said. One of the early Bachman novels (Rage, I think) was copyrighted in King's name). At the end it was to obviously (sp) that King was Bachman, so he admitted to it. Debby B (again): The story you mention (about the finger) is called "The Moving Finger" and is in N&D. It was also made in to a shortfilm in a serie called "Monsters". I don't post very often but I had to say something about Anthony's (Antman) post in #752. Sorry, but I have to disagree with you -- you don't HAVE to like one author or the other better. I read both King and Koontz (and many other authors) and I do like them all the same. They are all very different in their own way so it would be impossible for me to pick just one. And if I ever was forced to it I probably wouldn't read as much as I do because as good as any author is sometimes you need a change. Without that I don't think reading would be half as enjoyable.
