A FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) or a FAQL (Frequently Asked Questions List) is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the internet (or to an online service) to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards) to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. This episode guides will provide a short synopsis of the plot with episode titles (and production numbers in some cases) of each episode, and the guest credits for that episode. 0.2) Where the Author Can Be Reached This is the first edition of this FAQ & episode guide, and it is probably either incorrect in parts or is missing useful information. If any person has any questions, comments or suggestions about this FAQ, please contact Ian J. Ball at: IJBall@aol.com (for private correspondance) ijb@ucla.edu (for emergencies only) Any help on this project will be appreciated. 0.3) Where Can California Dreams Be Seen Internationally? Other locations where California Dreams can be seen or has been shown. The names used in the foreign country is listed in brackets like so "[..]": Australia Channel 7 Saturdays Canada ? America On-Line (AOL): Directions: Use "keyowrd" and enter "nbc" Hit button "Message Board" Select "List Topics" Select "California Dreams" folder 0.5) Where to Get More Information on California Dreams For general information, NBC Productions, which produces Cal. Dreams (as well as Saved by the Bell and Running the Halls) is probably a good place to start: NBC Productions, Inc. 330 Bob Hope Drive Burbank, CA 91523 0.6) Where Can I Find Copies of this FAQ on the 'Net, Either Through FTP or the WWW (the Web)? FTP: As of now, this FAQ is available from only one FTP site for sure: That first site is my own personal folder available in one of AOL's own FTP sites; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found there. (NOTE: Enter the menus as shown when trying to reach this site, as AOL does not allow a "dir" listing of the root directory of that site, as it would contain up to 2.5 million different folders!) (ALSO NOTE: My FAQs/episode guides for Saved by the Bell and Running the Halls are available from this same FTP site.): ftp://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/FTP/ WWW (the Web): Presently there are definitely at least four Web sites devoted to California Dreams (and one more devoted to several shows): The Web site for CD is my own personal site available from AOL; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ, in HTML format, can be found there. (NOTE: As above, my Web sites for the FAQ/episode guides for Saved by the Bell, Running the Halls and some other shows are available from this same WWW site.): http://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/IJBall3/WWW/CD/Home.html The second site is NBC's own "official California Dreams" Web page, which contains information about the show, cast and crew, and occationally the show's schedule: http://WWW.NBC.COM/entertainment/shows/california/index.html The third site belongs to Rick Moya (rjmoya@unm.edu), and contains some information about the show, and the songs in California Dreams. The address for Rick Moya's Web site is: http://www.unm.edu/~rjmoya/california/index.html The fourth site belongs to Rick Moya (rjmoya@unm.edu), and contains some information about the show, and the songs in California Dreams. The address for Rick Moya's Web site is: http://members.aol.com/dream517/california/index.htm Daniel Andersson has an (incomplete) "Short Guide" for California Dreams. This Web site contains all of his "Short Guide" episode lists. Daniel Andersson can be contacted via E-mail (dpa@canit.se). Those familiar with the original Saved by the Bell (SbtB-tOS) will note that SbtB toyed with the idea of Zack and the gang having a band. The girls had a singing group called the Hot Sundaes in one Grade 10 episode of Saved by the Bell, while a band, the Zack Attack, was featured in one Grade 11 and one Grade 12 episode, and in one "Tori" episode the gang had a do-wap singing group called the Five Aces. It appears that two SbtB-tOS writers, Ron Solomon and Brett Dewey, wanted to pursue this idea in a separate series. The result was California Dreams (CD for short in this FAQ). The show is about 5-7 teenagers who have a band, named the California Dreams. The band's musical style is pop and "surfer" music. California Dreams premiered on September 12, 1992 (with the epiosde "The First Gig") as the second Peter Engel show on NBC, and the second show of NBC's new T-NBC Saturday morning line-up. California Dreams is now syndicated, and can now be seen on local stations and on the cable channels WGN and TBS at various times. There 13 episodes in the first season of California Dreams, 18 episodes in its second season, 17 episodes in its third season, 15 in its fourth season, and 15 episode in its fifth (and last) season. That means that there are a total of 78 episodes of California Dreams. The basis for California Dreams is similar to Saved by the Bell. While SbtB is set at Bayside High in Pacific Palisades, CA; California Dreams is set in Redondo Beach, CA at Pacific Coast High School. In the first season, the band was started by Matt Garrison (Brent Gore) and his sister Jenny, and their friends, Tiffani (Kelly Packard) and Tony (William James Jones), along with their scheming neighbor and manager Sly Winkle (Michael Cade). The Garrison family (beside Matt and Jenny) was a prominent part of the first season. In the second season, the Garrison family was dropped (though the parents appeared in a couple of episodes), and a new guitarist named Jake Sommers (Jay Anthony Franke) was added. Jenny Garrison (Heidi Noelle Lenhart) left the show after the first three episodes of CD's second season, and was replaced by Hong Kong exchange student Samantha Woo (Jennie Kwan). The show also went for a much higher madcap comedy quotient in its second season, which made it a much more successful comedy. In the third season, all the cast members from season 2 stayed on, except Brent Gore (who played Matt Garrison). The departure of Gore thus severed virtually all ties between the "old" CD of the first season, and the "newer" CD of the third season and beyond. Two new cast members were added in place of Gore. One was Mark Winkle (Aaron Jackson), the "good-natured" cousin of Sly, who took over from Gore as one of the lead singers and as the keyboardist for the band. The other was Lorena Costa (Diana Uribe), whose family takes Sam in as a boarder and who offers the band her family's loft to practice in. With Gore's departure, many other members of the band stood in as lead singers, including Mark (of course), Tiffani, Tony and especially Jake, in addition to Matt's co-lead singer, Sam. The 17 episode third season of CD was actually among a much larger batch of at least 33 (and maybe as many as 35) episodes filmed in the spring and summer of 1994. Of the remaining episodes of this batch, 15 were shown in California Dreams' fourth season starting in the fall of 1995, and two were shown in the fifth (and last) season of California Dreams. To finish the show, an addition 15 episodes were ordered in 1996 for a fifth (and last) season of Californian Dreams. There were no major changes, in either cast or format, among seasons 3, 4 and 5. The primary storylines in seasons 3 were Jake and Lorena's romance, the romance between Tony and Sam, and the schemes and antics of Sly Winkle. The storylines of seasons 4 and 5 were the (early) breakup of Jake and Lorena, which was followed by the reunion of Jake and Tiffani as an item for the remainder of the show's run (until the last epiosde), and the continuing romance of Tony and Sam. In season 5, a new romance storyline between Sly and Lorena was pursued. The final (first-run) episode of California Dreams, "The Last Gig", aired on December 14, 1996 on NBC. In the fall of 1995, California Dreams went into syndication five days a week, and can now be seen on both WGN and TBS, as well as the international cable channel The Children's Channel (TCC). California Dreams can also be seen in the following foreign nations; only nations and airing times known by the author are listed (if you know others, E-mail me): COUNTRY NETWORK TIMES (and Other Info) ------- ------- ---------------------- Great Britain Channel 4 holidays, 12:05 pm Great Britain Trouble weekdays, 14:30 & 17:30 Ireland RTE Network 2 Thursdays, 6:00 pm Japan NKH-Edu Saturdays, 6:50 pm New Zealane C4 weekdays, 6:00 pm Orange weekdays, 5:00 pm Sweden TV 3 [unknown] Apparently some first-run episodes were shown on TCC *before* they were shown in the U.S. by NBC! And some episodes were definitely aired on the local (WBN-affiliate) Los Angeles station, KTLA, in 1994, long before they aired on NBC. 2.0) CALIFORNIA DREAMS: EPISODE GUIDE 2.1) The Proper Order of California Dreams Episodes Based on the Production Numbers As with the airing of "Saved by the Bell", NBC has taken great liberties with the airing order of its other T-NBC shows. While the proper chronological order probably most corresponds to the order of the production codes, NBC totally ignored that order when airing "California Dreams" (especially in later seasons). In fact it aired some episodes completely in the wrong seasons! Note, also, that "California Dreams" is supposed to take place during high school (which is 4 years in most places), yet the series aired over five. So it probably makes sense to consider seasons #4 and #5 together as "senior year". So using the production codes as a (loose) guide (where applicable: I do not have all the codes yet), this would (roughly) be the proper chronological of order of "California Dreams": Num Prod No Episode Title Air Date ---- --------- ------------------------ ---------- Season 1: 1.1 (6052) The First Gig 10/10/92 1.5 (6051) Dream Man 10/03/92 1.2 (6053) Battle of the Bands 09/12/92 1.6 (6054) Friends First 10/17/92 1.3 (6055) Beat of His Own Drum 09/19/92 1.12 (6056) This Time 11/28/92 1.11 (6057) They Shoot Videos, Don't They? 11/21/92 1.13 (6058) Where's Dennis? 12/05/92 1.9 (6059) Mother Child Reunion 11/07/92 1.4 (6060) Double Date 09/26/92 1.7 (6061) Guess Who's Coming to Brunch 10/26/92 1.8 (6062) It's a Guy Thing 10/31/92 1.10 (6063) Romancing the Tube 11/14/92 * Shown substantially out of production code order, and filmed after episode 1.2, but it *is* the first episode. -- Season 2: 2.1 (6064) Jake's Song 09/11/93 2.2 (6065) Dirty Dog Days 01/29/94 2.3 (6066) Ciao, Jenny 09/18/93 2.4 (6067) Wooing Woo 09/25/93 2.5 (6068) Sleazy Rider 10/02/93 2.16 (6069) Can't Buy Me Love 01/08/94 2.11 (6070) Vote of Confidence 11/13/93 2.15 (6071) 21 Jake Street 12/25/93 2.14 (6072) Save the Shark 12/04/93 2.6 (6073) The Sly Who Came to Dinner 10/09/93 2.12 (6074) The Year of the Woo 11/20/93 2.17 (6075) Rebel Without A Clue 01/15/94 2.8 (7401) A Question of Math 10/23/93 2.10 (7402) Bwa Ha Ha Means I Love You 11/06/93 2.9 (7403) High Plains Dreamer 10/30/93 2.13 (7404) Schoolhouse Rock 11/27/93 2.18 (7405) Indecent Promposal 02/05/93 -- Season 3: *3.1 *(60252) The Unforgiven 09/10/94 *3.2 *(60251) Follow Your Dreams 09/17/94 3.17 (60253) Tiffani's Gold 01/07/95 4.11 (60254) Heal the Bay 12/02/95 3.3 (60255) Budget Cuts 09/24/94 3.4 (60256) Blind Dates 10/01/94 3.15 (60257) Junior Achievement 12/24/94 3.16 (60258) The Treasure of PCH 12/31/94 3.8 (60259) The Princess and the Yeti 10/29/94 4.13 (60260) We'll Always Have Aspin 01/06/96 3.7 (60261) Trust Me 10/22/94 5.14 (60262) The Fashion Man 12/07/96 3.5 (60263) Yoko, Oh No! 10/08/94 3.14 (60264) Boyz 'r Us 12/17/94 3.6 (60265) The Long Goodbye 10/15/94 3.10 (60266) Daddy's Girl 11/19/94 3.9 (60267) Winkle/Wick's World 11/12/94 5.10 (60268) Babewatch 11/09/96 3.11 (60269) Family Tree 11/26/94 3.12 (60270) Harley and the Marlboro Man 12/03/94 3.13 (60271) Rebel Without a Nerve 12/10/94 * Apparently 3.1 and 3.2 were *filmed* out of order, but shown in the correct order. -- Season 4: 4.1 (60272) Two Too Much 09/09/95 4.12 (60273) Woo-ops 12/30/95 4.9 (60274) Operation Tony 11/18/95 4.8 (60275) Old 11/11/95 4.2 (60276) My Valentine 09/16/95 4.7 (60277) Secret Admirer 11/04/95 4.5 (60278) Fallen Idol 10/14/95 4.14 (60279) Lorena's Place 03/30/96 4.3 (60280) Principal Tiffani 09/30/95 4.4 (60281) The Dateless Game 10/07/95 4.15 (60282) Dancing Isn't Everything 04/06/96 5.8 (60283) Letters From Woo 10/25/96 4.6 (60284) Defending Sly's Life 10/21/95(?) 4.10 (60285?) The Last Gig 12/14/96 2.2) The Cast & Episode Guide of Season 1 SEASON 1 (13 Episodes, in airing(?) order): California Dreams seems to have been originally conceived as a family sitcom first, and a show about the band second. As a result, Matt and Jenny's parents, Richard and Melody Garrison, and their little brother, Dennis, were important parts of California Dreams in season #1. Also, as with "Saved by the Bell", Matt Garrison was originally the main focus of the show, with Jenny and Sly being the second focuses. First season episodes can be identified by the opening credit sequence: the opening credits were shown in sort of a quasi-video style, and the background was an LA beach. The lettering of the actors names was multi-colored, and (obviously) Heidi Lenhart (Jenny) is in them, while *neither* Jay Franke (Jake) or Jennie Kwan (Sam) are. First season episodes also featured videos to go along with the songs; this is different from later seasons in which the songs were always played live. The format of this first season of California Dreams changed somewhat in the second season. California Dreams, Season 1 cast: Matt Garrison -Brent Gore Jenny Garrison -Heidi Noelle Lenhart Sylvester "Sly" Winkle -Michael Cade Tiffani Smith -Kelly Packard Tony Wicks -William James Jones Mr. Richard Garrison -Michael Cutt Mrs. Melody Garrison -Gail Ramsey Dennis Garrison -Ryan O'Neill Episode 1.1 (#6051): "The First Gig" 10/10/92 (1.1) Randi Jo -Brittney Powell [multiple episodes; from FOX's Pacific Palisades; seen in ep's of SbtB & SbtB-tCY] (1.1) Sharkey -unbilled(Johnny Williams) [multiple episodes] The band's first playing gig, for a girl named Randi Jo that Matt has a crush on, falls on the same day that Mr. Garrison is taking the family on a trip to the Grand Canyon. So the band has to pull a scam (as "Van Halen"!) to get the date of the tickets switched. Meanwhile the band is reluctant to take on Sly as their manager. Matt Garrison's and his sister Jenny's band, which is made up of their friends Tony and Tiffani, and their (later) manager Sly, are introduced; setting: Pacific Coast High School, Redondo Beach, CA. Episode 1.2 (#6053): "Battle of the Bands" 09/12/92 (1.2) Angela Kolinsky -Holly Fields [Kelly Packard's real life roommate] (1.2) Bradley -Ron Melendez When there's a "Battle of the Bands" contest, Matt is determined to beat the band's arch-rival, "Bradley and the Billionaires", even if that includes following Sly's plan of getting Matt to date a judge (Holly Fields) who likes him. Meanwhile, Tony wants to get his ear pierced, until Tiffani scares him by telling him what's involved. Episode 1.3 (#6055): "Beat of His Own Dream" 09/19/92 (1.3) Coach Wicks -John Wesley (1.3) Sheldon -Phil Buckman (1.3) the delivery man -Mark Chaft Tony's football coaching father does not approve of Tony's being in the band, so Tony gives up on drumming and the Dreams to play football in the hopes of gaining his father's respect. Meanwhile, Tiffani has a secret admirer that may or may not be Dennis Garrison. Episode 1.4 (#6060): "Double Date" 09/26/92 (1.4) Sharkey -Johnny Williams [multiple episodes] (1.4) Randi Jo -Brittney Powell [multiple episodes] (1.4) Debbie, Paul -unbilled Tony is left in charge of Sharkey's (while Sharkey is on vacation), and Sly talks him into throwing a luau (which, of course, they will charge cover for), and books the band at the gig. The problem? Matt has agreed to have the band play at the wedding reception of Randi Jo's sister and her fiance, Debbie and Paul, which is on the same night as the luau. And neither Tony nor Matt are in a position to cancel, after Sly spends Sharkey's money on promotion for the luau, and Matt promises Randi Jo that the band will play here sister's reception. Episode 1.5 (#6052): "Dream Man" 10/03/92 (1.5) Jasmine -Jacqueline Shaw (1.5) Penny -Samantha Mills Sly and Tony overhear that Jenny and Tiffani (and two of their friends) are having a slumbr party at the Garrisons, and so they come right over! Sly easedrops on the proceedings and hears Jenny's description of her "dream man", so Sly overhauls his personality to match. Meanwhile Tony tries (futilely) to pick up on Jenny's friend Jasmine. And Tiffani writes some lyrics for a song of Matt's, but Matt doesn't have the heart to tell her that they're terrible. Episode 1.6 (#6054): "Friends First" 10/17/92 (1.6) Sharkey -Johnny Williams [multiple episodes] (1.6) Teddy -Bryan Dattilo [From NBC's Days of Our Lives] Matt's (formerly fat) friend Teddy (Bryan Dattilo), whom Matt met in music camp, comes to visit, and both Tiffani and Jenny are attracted to him, causing their friendship to fray. So Matt has to show the girls that their friendship is more important than the gorgeous guy they're fighting over. Meanwhile, Sly convinces Sharkey to give the Dreams a try-out at his restaurant, while Tony refuses to write down his orders which may imperil his job with Sharkey. Episode 1.7 (#6061): "Guess Who's Coming to Brunch" 10/26/92 (1.7) Mr. Ken Blanchard-Robert Pine [From CHiP's, and 1 episode of SbtB(GMMB).] (1.7) Kimberly Blanchard -Brooke Langton [From Melrose Place.] (1.7) Cindy Blanchard -unbilled (1.7) Uncle Slappy -unbilled After a gig at Sharkey's (in which the gang's amp blows out) Tony starts dating a rich girl named Kimberly (Brooke Langton), so he meets her parents at a brunch. But when Kimberly is out of the room, her father makes Tony an offer: he'll buy the band a new amp, if Tony will stop dating his daughter. So Tony must figure out a way to tell Kimberly about her dad's prejudice. Meanwhile, Sly gets the band to do an ad jingle for "Uncle Slappy's Root Beer" (which is terrible) to earn money for a new amp. Episode 1.8 (#6062): "It's a Guy Thing" 10/31/92 The girls are determined to demonstrate just how shallow Sly and Tony are, so they create a plan (a fictious supermodel from Paris, named "Monique"), but the plan backfires, then rebounds. Meanhwile, the Garrison men are determined to avoid a repairman, and try to repair a broken washing machine themselves. Episode 1.9 (#6059): "Mother and Child Reunion" 11/07/92 (1.9) Ms. Judy Webb Smith -Pamela Bowen [From Running the Halls] Tiffani's Mom (Pamela Bowen) returns from a 10 years of pursuing a dancing career in NY, and Tiffani's anger at her mother comes out at her sweet 16. Episode 1.10 (#6063): "Romancing the Tube" 11/14/92 (1.10) The Surf Guru -Peter Tork [From The Monkees] Figuring that surfing is a good way to get babes, Sly decides he wants to learn how to surf, so Tiffani decides to teach him. But, soon enough, Sly and Tiffani begin to discover that they like each other; but can Sly stay committed? Meanwhile, Matt, Tony and Jenny are determined to get the band a new lighting system, so they agree to paint some rooms in the Garrision house for Mrs. Garrison, in return for the $300 (up front) that they need to pay for the system. Episode 1.11 (#6057): "They Shoot Videos, Don't They?" 11/21/92 (1.11) Randi Jo -Brittney Powell [multiple episodes] (1.11) The (Video 99TV) V.J. -George McFly (1.11) Nikki Dentine -unbilled Sly wants the band to enter a video contest; his concept? the band gets chased around by groupies until the "head groupie/bimbo", Nikki Dentine, kisses Matt at the end of the video. But that concept doesn't sit well with Matt's girlfriend, Randi Jo (Brittney Powell). When Sly tricks Matt into doing it anyway, the kiss causes Randi Jo to breakup with Matt, with the result being a new (sad) song for Matt, and a new video idea for Sly. Episode 1.12 (#6056): "This Time" 11/28/92 (1.12) Eric -Michael Aron Jenny's self-centered old boyfriend, an actor named Eric, comes back into her life and monopolizes her time, to the band's chagrin. Meanwhile, Sly buys a van for the group that breaks down in the Garrisons' garage. Episode 1.13 (#6058): "Where's Dennis" 12/05/92 The band performs at their house while the Garrison parents are away and Matt is supposed to be watching Dennis, but disaster strikes when Dennis turns up missing. 2.3) The Cast & Episode Guide of Season 2 SEASON 2 (18 Episodes, mostly in airing order): Unsatisfied with the show's format in Season 1, the producers of California Dreams (and apparently the network) decided to change the direction of the show. The Garrison family element was dropped (though the parents appeared in a couple of epiosdes). A new character was added in the form of super cool guitarist Jake Sommers (Jay Anthony Franke). Originally, Jake was to be a love interest for Jenny. But Heidi Lenhart (Jenny Garrison) left the show early in the second season (Jenny was sent off to music school in Italy for the rest of high school), to pursue Lenhart's main interest: singing. She was replaced with the character of Samantha Woo (Jennie Kwan), a wacky, fast-talking exchange student from Hong Kong. Several other changes were made. The characters of Matt and Sly were de-emphasized in favor of the characters of Jake and Tony. Also, the madcap quotient of the show was increased (especially with Tony). And finally, a romantic storyline between Jake and Tiffani was pursued. Second season episodes can be identified by the animated, pseudo-Saved by the Bell background in the opening credits, and by the fact that Jay Franke (Jake) was in all of the opening credits and Jennie Kwan (Sam) was in most of them (though Heidi Lenhart was in the opening credits for the first 3 episodes of the second season, while Kwan was not). The changes seems to be have been the right ones, for CD improved greatly in its second season. Included from season 2 on are the offcial episode production numbers (in parentheses) which are used by the stations airing CD (and should be used when requesting specific episodes of CD). Airdates are also included, but I'm guessing at some of them and they may not all be correct. California Dreams, Season 2 cast: Matt Garrison -Brent Gore Jenny Garrison -Heidi Noelle Lenhart [First three episodes only] Tiffani Smith -Kelly Packard Tony Wicks -William James Jones Sylvester "Sly" Winkle -Michael Cade Jake Sommers -Jay Anthony Franke Samantha Woo -Jennie Kwan [From ep. #2.4 on] Episode 2.1 (#6064): "Jake's Song" 09/11/93 (2.1) Mr. Abercrombie -David George Brown [It sounds like Sly calls him Mr. Appleman, but he's Abercrombie in the credits.] (2.1) "Surf n' Turf" -unbilled (2.1) Surfer (rescuer) -unbilled [Multiple episodes. It's Jake Beecham who was Stingray on "SbtB-the College Years". See below.] The school tough guy, Jake Sommers, intimidates Matt, until Jake shows an interest in the band. However, Brent Gore (Matt Garrison) left the show for personal reasons; and it is said that Matt's family moved (to New York). Gore's departure completely eliminated the Garrison family element that had been the original basis for the show. Two additions were made to the cast in Gore's place. Sly's "good natured" cousin Mark Winkle (Aaron Jackson) was added as a character; he became the keyboardist and one of the lead singers for the band. In addition, Sam left the Garrison house (for obvious reasons: there was no Garrison family on the show anymore!) and beacme a boarder at the house of the parents of a new character, the wealthy fashion conscious dancer, Lorena Costa (Diana Uribe). Lorena also let the band use her parents loft as a place for the band to practice. In this season, romances between Jake and Lorena, and also between Tony and Sam, were pursued; in addition, storylines featuring Sly were again emphasized more. Third season episodes can be identified, once again, by changes in the opening title/credit sequence: the opening title sequence went back to the quasi-video style of the first season, and of course Jackson and Costa are in the credits. NOTE: The correct chronological order is the order of the production numbers (in parantheses), *not* the original airing order (see Section 2.1). Also, three of the season 3 episodes were aired on KTLA, channel 5 in Los Angeles, *before* they were first aired on NBC. Those episodes are signified by the original KTLA airdates in "[..]" below the NBC airdate. They tend to be episodes shown at the end of season 3 on NBC. As such, fourth season episodes can be identified by the same opening title/credit sequence as season 3. In season 4, the romance between Jake and Lorena was immediately eliminated in favor of the reunion of Jake and Tiffani (who were an item in season 2). The relationship between Tony and Sam also continued. And Sly was also a heavy focus of the show. Jake continued to be the primary lead singer for the band, with the others singing on occation. The last epiosde, "The Last Gig" aired on December 14, 1996, and is about the break-up of the band as most of the gang heads off to college. It is a surprisingly effective and emotional epiosde. NOTE: The correct chronological order is the order of the production numbers (in parantheses), *not* the original airing order (see Section 2.1). Several CD episodes were aired on KTLA, channel 5 in Los Angeles, in 1994 (due to a special syndication package between NBC Productions and KTLA); a couple of episodes were shown a full *two* years before they were aired on NBC as part of CD's fifth season. Episode 5.3 (#602??): "Honest Sly" 09/21/96 (5.3) Gem Diamond -Gary Beach [An "in"-joke: This same actor and character appeared in a "Tori" ep. of SbtB-tOS.] (5.3) Kathy -Laurie Cole Sly gets a "real" job: working for used-car salesman Gem Diamond (last seen on an episode of SbtB-tOS), but his conscience is once again brought to the fore after he sells a faulty car to Sam who is learning to drive (and is terrible). Meanwhile, Lorena pretends to be Mark's girlfriend to get a girl that Mark likes to notice him. Episode 5.4 (#602??): "Mop N' Pop" 09/28/96 (5.4) Al Sommers -John Del Regno (5.4) "Boggie Boy" -J. Steven Smith [multiple episodes] (5.4) "Pelican Man" -Brian Fish Smith (5.4) Mr. Linus -Mark McGrath (5.4) pizza man -Scott Schoen When Jake's dad gets laid off as an airplane mechanic, he takes a job as PCH's janitor, a position that causes Jake great shame and embarrassment. Meanwhile, the rest of the gang plays "Ba-Boom", a version of tag with water pistols. Episode 5.5 (#602??): "Diss-Honored" 10/05/96 (5.5) Harvey Cramdon -Alex Nevil [Also seen in episode 2.11] (5.5) photographer -Jason Weissbrod Sam is elected President of the Honors Society, and when she begins doing activities for the club, from which Tony is excluded, Tony decides that he will do anything to be a member of the club so he can be a part of Sam's life, and that includes cheating on a test. Meanwhile, the former Honors Society President Harvey Cramdon will do anything to get his old job back. Episode 5.6 (#602??): "Reel Teens" 10/12/96 (5.6) Mr. Soltis -Michael Immel [This is a joke: (5.6) Professor Solomon-Perry Chanel Moore Soltis & Solomon are writers for CD] (5.6) Scott -Chris Pegula (5.6) Miss Urbont -Lynne Winterstiller (5.6) Mr. Gibson -Jack Sheldon The TV show "Reel Teens" follows Jake around for a week (i.e. the camera is "Reel Teens"; you never see the film crew) to show how teenagers deal with stress. And the show has chosen a good week: Jake must take several tests at school, fix Tiffani's car and write a song for the band, and the stress is driving Jake nuts! Episode 5.7 (#602??): "Father Knows Bets" 10/19/96 (5.7) Mr. Dom Winkle -James Harper (5.7) Mancuso -Mario Roccuzzo (5.7) Schwartz -Paul Malcolm Pruett (5.7) boggie babe -Bethany Bassler Sly starts gambling, a habit that seems to get out of more out of control the more Sly's father ignores Sly in favor of work, until things get so out of hand that the band is affected. Meanwhile, Tony, who is on the Senior Awards committee, can't keep the big secret: that Jake is going to win the Himalaya Award (see CD episode #2.14), given to PCH's "most unique senior". Episode 5.8 (#60283): "Letters From Woo" 10/25/96 Sam decides to send a video home to her Uncle Tze Tze to reassure him that she is not alone in her stay in America, and this causes the gang to reminisce about their time with Sam. A retrospective episode. (Note: Matt Garrison is actually shown in a couple of the flashbacks!) Episode 5.9 (#602??): "Senior Prom" 11/02/96 (5.9) pelican man -Brian Fish Smith (5.9) boogie babe -Bethany Bassler It's Prom time and things seem to be going well, until Jake & Tiffani and Tony & Sam vie to be Prom King and Queen and the competition gets out of hand. Mark tries to get the courage to ask a girl to the Prom. Sly books the band for a gig on the same day as the Prom. [*Major* Continuity Error ALERT!: The Prom in episode 2.18, where Jake & Tiffani first broke up, is continualy refered to in this episode as the "Junior Prom" and as having taken place "last year". However, that would mean that all of seasons #3-5, including the dating of Jake & Lorena *and* Jake & Tiffani's reunion, all took place in one year. It makes much more sense if you consider all of season #2 to be "sophomore" year, season #3 to be "junior" year, and seasons #4 & #5 as "senior" year. Perhaps the Prom in episode 2.18 was a Junior Prom, just not *their* Junior Prom, and the phrase "last year" is dramatic license or a mistake on the part of the characters.] Episode 5.10 (#60268): "Babewatch" 11/09/96 [not aired on West Coast on this date] [first aired on KTLA: 11/27/94] (5.10) Marty Stinson -Paul Kreppel (5.10) Dann Hazakoff -Edward Trucco Tiffani lands a job as one surfer extra on the TV show "Babewatch", and she agrees to let Mark, Sly and Lorena be the other surfer extras, as long as she gets to "teach" them surfer ways. Sam also lands a job on the TV show, which causes one of the show's stars to "eye" aspiring actress Sam, leading to jealousy from Tony. Meanwhile, Jake takes a job as the Producer's assistant. Episode 5.11 (#602??): "Love Letters" 11/16/96 (5.11) Coach Flack -Ronald B. Solomon [Guess who! It's CD's co-creator.] (5.11) John Lode -Todd Rulapaugh (5.11) Paul -Sean Blodgett (5.11) Otto -Jim Koehler (5.11) messenger -Jon Lauren Each of the gang swears to fix their biggest regrets about high school before they graduate: Tiffani regrets being mean to a boy that wanted to date her freshman year, Sam and Tony regret not trying out for the "dance-a-thon" (see episode #4.15), Mark regrets being intimidated by the high school P.E. teacher, and Jake regrets not playing the bagpipes in public. But the biggest (and most secret) regret of all is Sly's, who regrets that he never told Lorena how he really feels about her, so he remedies the situation by writing her a series of anonymous love letters. Episode 5.12 (#60295?): "Graduation" 11/22/96 (5.12) Prin. Blumford -Earl Boen [multiple episodes; Guest starred in numerous TV shows & movies (e.g. T2).] (5.12) Sara -Tara Reid (5.12) Mr. Jayson -William Utay [Another joke: Jayson is the name of a member of the CD crew.] (5.12) police officer -Leonard O. Turner (5.12) "Boogie Boy" -J. Steven Smith [multiple episodes] (5.12) "Reef" -Shimar Frazier (5.12) jock -Andrew Walter Butler (5.12) teacher -Lillian Byrd Trying to impress a girl (Tara Reid), Mark allows beer at Lorena's graduation party, but things get out of hand when he goes driving with the girl after drinking. Jake & Tiffani must do one more class project or they won't graduate. The gang get their diplomas from Principal Blumford. Episode 5.13 (#602??): "A Band Divided" 11/30/96 (5.13) Judge Maui Zowee -Steve Mattila (5.13) Jonathan -Lee Sosin (5.13) "Boogie Boy" -J. Steven Smith [multiple episodes] When the band's amp breaks, Lorena offers to pay for a replacement, but there's a catch: she demands to be made co-manager of the band with Sly, which becomes a problem when neither will compromise on ideas, costing the band gigs. Meanwhile, the new amp overloads the loft's wiring, so Jake and the guys try and rewire the place. Episode 5.14 (#60262): "The Fashion Man" 12/07/96 [first aired on KTLA: 10/23/94] (5.14) Amber Dubois -Julie Payne (5.14) Samson -Dan Clark (5.14) Hank -Todd Fraser (5.14) girl #1 -Jeanine Michelle (5.14) girl #2 -Melissa Deppe (5.14) boy #1 -Dion Zamora When Sly starts to feel unappreciated, he follows up on an ad from the "Amber Dubois Modeling Agency" which claims to have discovered supermodel "Samson", but when Amber starts charging Sly big bucks, that gang comes to worry that the whole thing is a scam. Episode 5.15 (#60296?): "The Last Gig" 12/14/96 (5.15) Brett Dewey -Alvin Walker [Another joke. Brett Dewey is one of the co-creators of CD.] (5.15) "stunt man" -Eugene Collier It's the last week of summer, and each of the gang is heading off to do their own thing: Tiffani is going to the University of Hawaii to study oceanography, Sam is going off to Oxford to study physics, Mark is going to the Juliard School of Music, Sly and Lorena are going to Pacific University (presumably to study business and/or fashion), and Tony is off to study acting (though it's never said where he's going off to!). But Jake is frantically trying to keep the band together by landing a contract, which he does when Brett Dewey of "StyleJam" records offers him a contract. But the contract is just for Jake, which causes everyone else to realize that Jake should go on with the music, because the others want to break up the band and get on with the rest of their lives, something that is difficult for Jake to accept. [The final episode of "California Dreams", and perhaps the best episode yet (certainly the most poignant); it's certainly one of the best examples of an "end-of-high school" episode on TV. A very good job from writer & co-creator Ronald Solomon. THE END.] 3.0) ACTORS, MISCELLANEA AND TRIVIA 3.1) Background on the Actors Most of the following information was provided to AOL by NBC.
