Copyright, Ian J. Ball, 1994. 0.1) What is a FAQ? What is an Episode Guide? A FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) or a FAQL (Frequently Asked Questions List) is a document that serves to answer commonly (or perhaps not so commonly) asked questions about a particular subject. Such a document is usually posted to the internet (or to an online service) to the various groups or BB's (bulletin boards) to which it is relevant, in the hopes of answering these often asked questions. For instance, this FAQ serves to answer questions about the TV show Saved by the Bell, and so will be posted to some relevant usenet groups (and BB's in America OnLine) in hopes of answering the common questions asked about Saved by the Bell. Hopefully, this FAQ will mean that people will not have to post a message to get the answer to their question. An episode guide is a document that serves to provide information about each episode of a particular TV show. Some episode guides list only the number of episodes aired and the episode titles for a show. Others go further and will list original first-run airdates and/or production codes (an example of this is Daniel Andersson's (daniel@algonet.se) "Short Guides" for Saved by the Bell, California Dreams and Running the Halls which are complete episode lists). Many episode guides actually provide a short synopsis of the plot of each episode, and even the credits for that episode. The episode guide for this FAQ (which is Part II of this FAQ) is an example of the latter. 0.2) Acknowledgments Special thanks to my co-authors, Christy Ballard, Daniel Andersson (whose Short Guides provided information used in this and other FAQ's), Ivo Kroone and Peter B. Murray, without whom proper episode guides for Saved by the Bell would not have been possible. Thanks also to (in no particular order) David Tamkin, Aaron Portraz (AP78@aol.com), Don Bagert, Ken Higginson, Scott and Dawn Kilbourn, Rick Kitchen, Niels (niranr@inet.uni-c.dk), Joseph Ross, Mark Conkle, Aaron Binns, Chris Sidi (& friend), Deron Brosh, Mike Ogburn, Vincent A. If your location does not presently subscribe to this group, and you wish to get it at your location, ask your news/system administrator to subscribe to this group. Another group by the name of *alt.tv.saved-by-the-bell* also exists, but it is a very low-traffic, limitedly distributed group. If your location only gets the group *alt.tv.saved-by-the-bell*, and does not get *alt.tv.saved-bell*, you should ask your system administrator to get *alt.tv.saved-bell*. Do NOT use *alt.tv.saved-by-the-bell*. Sometimes, people post questions about or information on "Saved by the Bell" to the usenet group *rec.arts.tv*, or even to other groups. If you see such a post, please direct them to *alt.tv.saved-bell* whenever possible (this group could use more posters!). 0.5) Where Can I Find Saved by the Bell Discussions on the On-line Services? The Web (WWW): Presently there are several (known) Web pages for Saved by the Bell. There are also a couple of fan sites devoted to the stars of the show (see below). Here are the main SbtB web sites, first: The first one is my own personal site available from AOL; the most up-to-date version of this FAQ can be found there. Personally, I advise checking out my SbtB Web site first, as it is the most complete of any SbtB WWW site. Saved by the Bell is a show about a group of 5-7 adolescents, and their adventures through school. The main characters throughout all versions of Saved by the Bell (mostly excepting the New Class) are the scheming Zack Morris, and his delightfully clueless friend Screech Powers. The show follows their various travails through junior high school, high school and, finally, college. Saved by the Bell can be seen in all its forms in various locations on your TV dial. The spin-off from Saved by the Bell, Saved by the Bell-the New Class (see the SbtB FAQ, pt. 4) can be seen on NBC, in the T-NBC line up, on Saturday mornings. The original "Saved by the Bell" (including "Good Morning, Miss Bliss," and "Saved by the Bell-the College Years") can be seen on cable TV on channels WGN and TBS weekday afternoons and on Saturdays on WGN. It can also be seen on various local stations around the country mostly in the afternoon and/or on weekends. 1.2) The Three and a Half Incarnations of Saved by the Bell Many new viewers of Saved by the Bell are confused by the changing characters and various settings for Saved by the Bell. The astute soon figure out that there are some rather major continuity lapses between various parts of Saved by the Bell. The first major continuity lapse is easily understandable once one knows the history of the show itself. Basically, Saved by the Bell did not begin its run as "Saved by the Bell", nor did (most of) its first season air on NBC. The "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" Paradox: --------------------------------------- Saved by the Bell first began as a pilot for NBC, and the name of the show was "Good Morning, Miss Bliss." The GMMB pilot did air on NBC back in 1987 (it aired in "The Facts of Life's" timeslot). The pilot for GMMB did not have any of the cast of Saved by the Bell (or even any of the later cast of "Good Morning, Miss Bliss"!). Instead, the pilot starred Hayley Mills, Brian Austin Green (of Beverly Hills, 90210 fame), and Jaleel White (of Family Matters fame)! In the pilot, "Miss" Bliss was actually a newlywed! And Green did not play Zack Morris, or a "Zack Morris-like" character; instead he played a character who who super serious, and who always wore business suits to school. Still, NBC passed on the project (at this time), and The Disney Channel picked it up and filmed 13 episodes in 1988 for a winter 1988-spring 1989 run on The Disney Channel. Indeed, Good Morning, Miss Bliss (GMMB for short) was originally conceived as a vehicle for Hayley Mills, a popular actress who had done many previous movies for Disney. Mills played the character of a widowed junior high school teacher, Miss Carrie Bliss, and the show was mostly about her experiences as a teacher (as well as her hapless love life!). (Some people (e.g. Don Bagert) think that the "Miss Bliss as a widow" storyline of later GMMB episodes is still consistent with the 'newlywed' storyline from the pilot, and they believe that the GMMB episodes with Zack, et al. took place a year after the pilot episode.) This was the first incarnation of "Saved by the Bell". The setting for the show was John F. Kennedy Junior High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the remainder of GMMB's run, Zack (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), Screech (Dustin Diamond), Lisa (Lark Voorhies) and Principal Richard Belding (Dennis Haskins) were the other main characters in the show. However, there were still other characters (e.g. Nikki, Mikey, Tina and Milo) in the show who were never in later seasons of the Saved by the Bell show. Also, the focus of GMMB was Miss Bliss first, and basically Zack Morris second. The show was produced by Peter Engel, and William F. Phillips was the Executive in Charge of Production. After the move to NBC, some of the GMMB episodes were rerun on NBC in the summer after the Grade 9 season along with an introduction by Zack explaining that this was what happened to him "in junior high". In any case, it is the absence of Kelly and Jessie and Slater, and the setting of the school in Indianapolis that account for the most glaring continuity lapse of the Saved by the Bell series. There were 13 episodes made of Good Morning, Miss Bliss, but Disney decided not to continue with the project. So it appears Producer Peter Engel, William F. Phillips, et al. took the show back to NBC which then decided to pick up the project again, as its first live action show for NBC's Saturday morning line up. Major changes were made for the show's second incarnation. First the name of the show was changed to "Saved by the Bell" (in this FAQ, SbtB, or SbtB, tOS for short). The setting was changed from JFK, Junior High School in Indianapolis, IN to Bayside High School in Pacific Palisades, CA, which is southwest of Los Angeles and Santa Monica. The characters of Zack Morris, Screech Powers, Lisa Turtle and Principal Richard Belding were kept for the show, and three new main characters were added: Kelly Kapowski (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen), Jessie Spano (Elizabeth Berkley) and new transfer student, A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez). The other characters, including Miss Bliss, were dropped. And, of course, the focus of the show changed to Zack Morris, and to a lesser extent his friend Screech. Some of the original production crew of GMMB did not stay on for SbtB, though some other members of the crew continued on with the show as SbtB. But this introduces the first continuity questions. How is it that three students and a principal can move 2000 miles between junior high and high school and still stay together in the same school? Why does Zack tell Slater in the first episode of Grade 9 that he's been after Kelly for the previous "2 years (and 6 boyfriends)" when no mention is made of her in GMMB? Why is no mention made of Zack's "good friends" from GMMB, Nikki and Mikey in SbtB; and why is no mention made of Zack's "friend since the first grade" Jessie in GMMB? Why is Zack's father's named *Peter* Morris in GMMB, and why is his father's name *Dereck* Morris in SbtB (and why do different actors play Peter and Dereck)? Why is it said in GMMB that Zack's father and mother are divorced when they clearly are not divorced in SbtB? Why is mention made of Screech having a brother in GMMB, when it is clearly stated that he is an only child in SbtB? What is the explanation?! The only explanation for this is that there is no good explanation (unless you want to count alternate realities). Saved by the Bell was a farce by nature, and its characters and gags were the main focus of the show. Unfortunately that meant that the plot and the show's continuity must (and did) take a back seat to character development and to the comedy in the series, especially in its change from "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" on Disney, to "Saved by the Bell" on NBC. A Short History of SbtB, the original series: --------------------------------------------- Saved by the Bell, the original series (SbtB, tOS for short), debuted on NBC on August 20, 1989 in primetime. Saved by the Bell aired twice in primetime (once on August 20, and once later) before settling into its Saturday morning timeslot starting on September 9, 1989. SbtB, tOS played out most of its existence, within the reworked plot definitions mentioned above, in NBC's Saturday morning line-up. For Grades 9 through 12, the show followed the adventures of Zack, Screech, Kelly, Slater, Jessie and Lisa in Bayside High, and in some other settings such as at the Mailbu Sands Beach Club, in Palm Springs and in Hawaii. For specifics on the episodes of GMMB or SbtB, see the Saved by the Bell FAQ, pt. 2-the Episode Guide. Also during the Grade 12 season of SbtB, tOS, the Saved by the Bell- Hawaiian Style TV movie was aired on November 27, 1992 in primetime on NBC. It was rerun again in primetime on August 31, 1993 on NBC in the run up to the primetime premiere of Saved by the Bell-The College Years (see below). Again, see the Saved by the Bell FAQ, pt. 2-the Episode Guide for more on the SbtB Hawaii TV movie. But something happened when Grade 12 rolled around. By this time, the show was very popular. But something needed to be done now that the show had reached the end of high school. The graduation episode had been filmed, and even a SbtB TV movie set in Hawaii had been filmed after that (though chronologically, it actually appears to be set in time after the Grade 11 season and *before* the Grade 12 season, and obviously it aired during the regular Grade 12 season). But the question was, what to do with the show now? Another problem came when Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (Kelly) and Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie) decided that they wanted to move on and leave the show half-way through the Grade 12 season. The "Tori/Kelly-Jessie" Paradox: -------------------------------- SbtB producer Peter Engel seems to have come up with several solutions. He appears to have decided to produce another partial season of SbtB proper in Grade 12 at Bayside, using a new female character in the place of Kelly and Jessie. This would allow them to finish the Grade 12 season of SbtB, tOS. This, in turn, would give the producers time to develop two new series for production: "Saved by the Bell: The College Years", the continuation of the adventures of Zack and Screech (and Slater), and "Saved by the Bell: The New Class", the continuation of the adventures of Mr. Belding and the students of Bayside High. So, a new character was created for this "half" incarnation of "Saved by the Bell". The character's name was Tori (Leanna Creel). This introduces another continuity question: it is still Grade 12 at Bayside, so where are Kelly and Jessie? It is obvious that the "Tori" Grade 12 episodes are supposed to take place in the same time-frame as the "Kelly and Jessie" Grade 12 episodes; we know this beacuse the "Tori" Grade 12 episodes were aired *concurrently* (i.e. on the very same days) that "Kelly & Jessie" Grade 12 episodes were in the '92-'93 Grade 12 season on NBC. So what's going on? The way to explain away this apparent discontinuity is to say that the "Tori" episodes are taking place at the same time as the "Kelly and Jessie" episodes, but that Kelly and Jessie are "off screen". Thus, Kelly and Jessie, and Tori, must be "in different classes", and we, the viewer, are seeing Tori on different days and different nights or in different locations than when or where we saw Kelly and Jessie in their Grade 12 episodes. So why are Kelly and Jessie almost never mentioned in Tori episodes, and vice versa? And why is Lisa's hair style different in some of the "Tori" episodes from the hair style she had through the entire "Kelly & Jessie" Grade 12 year? Well, you got me! and this explanation only goes so far. Though filmed before the "Tori" episodes, the Grade 12 Graduation episode was shown after the Tori episodes (as apparently was the Hawaii TV movie), in primetime on NBC on May 22, 1993, along with the pilot to "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" (see below). It was rerun, again with The College Years pilot, in the regular timeslot for the premiering Saved by the Bell-The College Years on Tuesday, September 7, 1993 at 8:00 pm EST. The Resolution of SbtB, the original series: -------------------------------------------- At the end of SbtB, tOS, it looked like the gang would all end up at different colleges. But in the pilot of Saved by the Bell-the College Years (SbtB-tCY for short), we saw that Zack, Screech and Slater ended up going to "California University" in the San Francisco Bay Area (presumably in Berkeley). This was the third (and last) incarnation of Saved by the Bell proper. After the filming of the pilot, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (Kelly) decided to rejoin the cast of SbtB-tCY, and was seen in The College Years for the rest of its run. For more information, see the Saved by the Bell-The College Years FAQ, which is the SbtB FAQ, pt. 3. SbtB-tCY ran 18 episodes (and a pilot), but after this 19 episode run, NBC canceled the show due to low ratings, and it showed its last episodes as a 1-hour finale, on February 8, 1994. In the finale, Zack and Kelly were preparing to get married. SbtB-tCY was ended abruptly, before Zack and Kelly's marriage could be filmed. So Peter Engel seems to have convinced NBC to let him film a 2 hour TV movie to tie up the loose ends. In the 1994 TV movie, "Saved by the Bell: The Wedding", which aired in primetime on Friday, October 7, 1994 at 8:00 pm EST on NBC, the gang heads off to Las Vegas to witness the marriage of Zack and Kelly. See the Saved by the Bell FAQ, pt.3-the College Years FAQ for details on this TV movie. So ended the run of the original Zack Morris based "Saved by the Bell" after 5 years on the air, and more than 100 episodes. Of course, there was a fourth incarnation of Saved by the Bell: Saved by the Bell-the New Class. But, this was more of a spin-off than a sequel of the original Saved by the Bell, and thus is really the subject of a separate FAQ (see the SbtB FAQ, pt. 4). 1.3) Part 1: Good Morning, Miss Bliss (Grade 8; '87-88 season) As stated above, Good Morning, Miss Bliss (GMMB) was only a partial prequel to Saved by the Bell. It ran on the Disney channel in the spring of 1989, and 13 episodes were broadcast (not inculding the pilot). The main character was junior high teacher Miss Carrie Bliss. Her best friend was fellow (art) teacher Tina, her boss was Principal Richard Belding (whose character was much more formal and much less humorous and likable in this incarnation of SbtB), and the school handyman was a silly fellow named Milo. Miss Bliss' class (except in the pilot) was made up of smart aleck Zack Morris, odd but lovable genius Screech Powers, mall princess Lisa Turtle, all-around normal kid Mikey, and young feminist and idealist Nikki. A listing of the cast of the show follows, and a description of each episode of GMMB can be found in SbtB FAQ, pt.2-the Episode Guide. All GMMB episodes were copyrighted 1988. SbtB: "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" cast: Miss Carrie Bliss -Hayley Mills Zack Morris -Mark-Paul Gosselaar Screech Powers -Dustin Diamond Lisa Turtle -Lark Voorhies Nicole "Nikki" Coleman -Heather Hopper Mikey Gonzalez -Max Battimo Mr. Richard Belding -Dennis Haskins Tina Palidrino -Joan Ryan Milo Williams -T.K. Carter 1.4) Part 2a: Saved by the Bell, w/ Kelly & Jessie (Grade 9-12; '89-93) This period was really the heart of the Saved by the Bell series. It was here that most people's favorite characters, like Kelly, Jessie, Lisa and Slater were seen. It was also in this period that most of the best episodes of Saved by the Bell can be found. The (main) Saved by the Bell cast list follows. Saved by the Bell cast: Zachary "Zack" Morris -Mark-Paul Gosselaar Samuel "Screech" Powers-Dustin Diamond Lisa Marie Turtle -Lark Voorhies "A.C." Albert Clifford Slater -Mario Lopez Kelly Kapowski -Tiffani-Amber Thiessen Jessica "Jessie" Myrtle Spano -Elizabeth Berkley Prin. Richard Belding -Dennis Haskins Grade 9 focused mostly on the battle between Zack and Slater for the heart of Kelly Kapowski. A subplot through this season was the wacky owner of the school hangout/diner, the Max, owned by magician Max (Ed Alonzo). Semi-regulars in the Grade 9 season were the monotonic and rather staid math teacher Mr. Dewey (Patrick T. O'Brien; he is seen in an episode of the Grade 10 season too), the history teacher Miss Wentworth (Carol Lawrence; she was also in a Grade 10 episode) and the very deaf and confused english teacher Miss Simpson (Pamela Kosh; she was also seen in episodes in Grade 10, Grade 11 and in the New Class). In this season we met A.C.'s army father Major Slater (Gerald Castillo) and Lisa's father Dr. Turtle (Henry Brown). There are two distinctive features that can be used to recognize that a SbtB episode is a Grade 9 episode. The first thing to notice about the Grade 9 episodes was that Zack and Screech were both shorter than Jessie and Slater at this time. Also, Zack's voice had not changed until the very end of the Grade 9 season, and Screech looked very young and his voice was pre-pubescent all through this season. Slater, Lisa and Kelly also appeared to be rather young here (at least early on in the Grade 9 season). The second distinctive feature is the listing of Ed Alonzo in the opening credits. The Grade 9 episodes were copyrighted 1989, and there were 20 Grade 9 episodes. Saved by the Bell (extra) cast (Grade 9 only): Max -Ed Alonzo Grade 10 was marked by two significant storylines: Zack's eventual winning of Kelly and his victory over Slater in the battle for Kelly, and Slater's later dating of Jessie. In Grade 10, several recurring characters were introduced: Mr. Tuttle (Jack Angeles; who was seen in episodes through the "Kelly and Jessie" Grade 12 season), James, the actor (Mark Blankenfield; also seen in Grade 11, and on into SbtB-the New Class), Zack's father Dereck Morris (James Sanderford; also seen in the "Tori" Grade 12 season), and Violet Bickerstaff (played by Tori Spelling of BH, 90210; she was also seen in one Grade 11 episodes). In one episode, we also saw Screech's mother (played by Ruth Buzzi of "Laugh In" fame). Grade 10 saw the start of the explosion in the number of bit players (including the oft seen but unbilled Ollie, and the nerd Herbert), and Grade 10 saw the start of the (somewhat annoying) habit of the use of the "Nerds" and the "Jocks" as supporting characters in SbtB. One can identify Grade 10 episodes several ways. By Grade 10, Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack) was through puberty and his voice had changed. By this time, he also became taller than Mario Lopez (Slater). Dustin Diamond's (Screech) voice had changed early in the Grade 10 season, and by the end of the Grade 10, Diamond too was about as tall or taller than Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie). Also, at the end of the closing credits the location of the studio where SbtB was filmed for the Grade 10 season was listed for some episodes. The Grade 10 episodes were all copyrighted 1990, and there were 18 Grade 10 episodes. The Grade 11 season began with the break-up of Zack and Kelly, precipitated by Kelly's interest in her boss at the Max, Jeff (played by Patrick Muldoon of "Days of Our Lives"). In the Grade 11 season, we met Zack's mother (Melody Rogers), Lisa's Mother (Susan Beaubian), and Jessie's (maternal) step-brother Eric (Josh Hoffman, in another two- parter) and father (George McDaniel; in the Palm Springs two-parter). In Grade 11, we saw the gang (especially Jessie) begin to worry about college. Grade 11 also saw the first attempts at moving the setting of Saved by the Bell outside Bayside High: there was the Palm Springs two- parter, the Malibu Sands run, the Christmas two-parter (based primarily in a mall), another episode set in a mall (as the gang tried to get U2 tickets) and the rather strange "Murder Mystery Weekend" episode which was also set outside Bayside. It should be noted that Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Lark Voohies were each absent from an episode in the Grade 11 season, and Elizabeth Berkley was absent from two entire episodes. The Grade 11 episodes are all copyrighted 1991, except for the Zack-Kelly break-up two parter, which is copyrighted for 1990. Because of this it can be hard to identify 1991 Grade 11 episodes from the Grade 12 episodes (which are also copyright 1991). See the episode guide of SbtB (Part II of this FAQ), especially the production code list, for more help on figuring this out. NBC aired 26 episodes in the Grade 11 season (20 Bayside episodes, and 6 Malibu Sands summer episodes), though there should actually be a 21st Bayside episode (which was aired in the Grade 12 season) in this season for a total of 27 episodes. Following on what was said above, two sets were used when the filming was done for the Grade 11 season of SbtB: one set for the 20 (actually 21) episodes of the "Bayside" Grade 11 season, and another set to be used for a six episode summer run of SbtB (a la Beverly Hills, 90210 in the summer of 1991). This summer run of 6 extra episodes was set at Malibu Sands Beach Club; it was actually aired *concurrently* with the regular Bayside Grade 11 episodes (from the Grade 11 season on, SbtB was aired twice on Saturdays on NBC, usually one episode right after the other). In these episodes, the gang had all gotten a job at Malibu Sands and they were working for the owner, a man named Mr. Carosi. Carosi's daughter, Stacey (Leah Remini), soon showed up, and Zack developed an interest in her (remember, this is after the break-up of Zack and Kelly from the "Jeff incident" in the middle of Grade 11). This is pretty much the synopsis for the plot of the Malibu Sand episodes. See the episode guide (SbtB FAQ, pt. 2) for more details. The actors who played the Carosi family follow. Malibu Sands Episodes-The Summer Series: Stacey Carosi -Leah Remini Mr. Carosi -Ernie Sabella By Grade 12, the show seemed to have run out of steam and to be going through the motions (though others dispute this). Thiessen was absent from another episode, and by the end of the season, we had not one, but two episodes made up primarily of flashbacks and retrospectives (perhaps necessitated by the increasing absences of Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Elizabeth Berkley). However, the show did end with a very good Graduation episode. It should be noted that the way to identify Grade 12 episodes is to notice that the Executive in Charge of Production was listed as *Gary Considine*, and not William F. Phillips who was the Executive in Charge of Production for GMMB/SbtB for the Grade 8 through the first part of the Grade 11 season. These Grade 12 episodes were all copyrighted 1991; there are only *10* "Kelly & Jessie" Grade 12 episodes (though 11 were aired, as one Grade 11 episode was first aired in the Grade 12 season). Finally, after the Gradualtion Special was filmed, the producers wanted to continue the run. So a two hour SbtB TV movie was filmed, and it was called "Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style". It aried on November, 1992, during the regular Grade 12 season. It included Mr. Belding, and it followed the gang (including Kelly and Jessie) through their adventures on a two week vacation to Hawaii. This movie seemed kind of forced storywise, and it is not the best example of Saved by the Bell. For more inforamtion on the plot of the Saved by the Bell TV movie, please see the SbtB FAQ, pt.2-the Episode Guide. 1.5) Part 2b: Saved by the Bell, w/ Tori (Grade 12 only; '92-93 season) As stated above, after Thiessen and Berkley left the show, the second half of the Grade 12 season was filmed using Leanna Creel (of the Creel triplets) as transfer-student Tori Scott; this was doen presumably to complete the Grade 12 season. These episodes were aired concurrently (i.e. on the same days) with the "Kelly & Jessie" Grade 12 episode; a "Tori" episode usually followed an episode from the "Kelly & Jessie" Grade 12 season. Tori was a rival to Zack in her first episode, but she soon became a brief love interest for Zack. Many fans feel that the character of Tori never really became a force on her own. Some of the Tori episodes were interesting, but overall they suffer in comparison to the Kelly & Jessie episodes (in plot quality for one, and especially in comedy quality: they forshadow the low comedic content of "the New Class"). And again, the viewer was left to assume that Tori, and Kelly and Jessie, must have been in "different" classes, which might explain why we almost never saw (or heard) about Kelly and Jessie in these episodes (and vica versa). We continued to see the characters' families in this "Tori" half-season however. In one episode, we finally met the oft mentioned Mrs. Belding, when Zack helped her give birth (we discover in SbtB-the New Class that the Beldings named their baby after Zack); we also meet Slater's little sister, J.B. And we see Mrs. Turtle and Mr. Morris again. The use of "Geek" and "Jock" extras was very heavily utilized in the "Tori" season. The Grade 12 "Tori" episodes were all copyrighted 1992. The "Tori" cast is below. Saved by the Bell (the "Tori" Timeline) cast: Zack Morris -Mark-Paul Gosselaar A.C. Slater -Mario Lopez Screech Powers -Dustin Diamond Lisa Turtle -Lark Voorhies Tori Scott -Leanna Creel Prin. Richard Belding -Dennis Haskins 1.6) Part 3: Short Intro to Saved by the Bell-the College Years (and the SbtB FAQ, pt.3-the College Years) In Saved by the Bell-the College Years (for reasons that aren't clear to me), Zack, Slater, Screech and Kelly ended up going to "California University" in the San Francisco Bay Area (presumably Berkeley). The first three ended up as roommates, and Kelly later got into C.U. after being accepted off the waiting list. In the pilot, there were three female suitemates sharing the place with Zack, Screech and Slater: Leslie, Alex, and a third roommate named Danielle Marks (played by Essence Atkins). When Tiffani-Amber Thiessen rejoined the show, Atkins' character was dropped in favor of Kelly who became the third female suitemate. Their Floor Master was Mike Rogers (played by ex-NFL football player Bob Golic). The gang's professor in an anthropology class was Jeremiah Laskey (introduced in the show's second episode after the pilot), who later became a love interest for Kelly. Also later in the season, a nemesis for Zack was introduced in the form of the very strict Dean McMann (first seen in the thirteenth episode). For more information on SbtB-the College Years, see the SbtB FAQ, pt. 3. The College Years was copyrighted 1993. SbtB-the College Years cast: Zack Morris -Mark-Paul Gosselaar A.C. Slater -Mario Lopez Screech Powers -Dustin Diamond Kelly Kapowski -Tiffani-Amber Thiessen Leslie Burke -Anne Tremko Alex Taber -Kiersten Warren Michael Rogers -Bob Golic Prof. Jeremiah Lasky -Patrick Fabian Dean Susan McMann -Holland Taylor Danielle Marks -Essence Atkins [Pilot only] Because SbtB-tCY was canceled before Zack and Kelly actually got married, a 1994 2-hour TV was made, called "Saved by the Bell: the Wedding", in which Zack and Kelly, Slater, Screech and Lisa head off to Las Vegas to finally witness the marriage of Zack and Kelly. The movie aired on NBC on Friday, October 7, 1994. Again, for more information on SbtB-tCY, see the SbtB FAQ, pt. 3. 1.7) How Many Episodes Are There? What follows is the number of episodes, by season, of the entire Saved by the Bell series to the best of my knowledge. I have obtained the original air dates for most episodes of Saved by the Bell, and what follows is a list of the airing seasons. I am guessing the filming order based on what I know from the production codes, the episode copyright dates, and what I've heard about the development of Saved by the Bell. Filming Order: When Filmed: Good Morning, Miss Bliss: Pilot 1987 (for Disney) Good Morning, Miss Bliss-Grade Eight 1988 (for Disney) SbtB, Grade Nine 1989 (for NBC) SbtB, Grade Ten 1990 SbtB, Grade Eleven 1990-91 SbtB, Malibu Sands 1991 SbtB, Grade Twelve (w/ Kelly & Jessie) 1991 SbtB, Graduation episode 1991 SbtB, Hawaiian Style 1992 SbtB, Grade Twelve (w/ Tori) 1992 SbtB-the College Years (pilot) 1993, Spring SbtB-the College Years 1993-94 SbtB, Wedding in Las Vegas 1994, Summer Airing Order: When First Shown: Good Morning, Miss Bliss: Pilot 1987? I have obtained the original airing order of many of the episodes, mostly from Daniel Andersson's "Short Guides". This new information clarifies the proper airing order, but it still may not perfect. As far as the guest credits go, I have done my best to obtain as many of them as I can. I have seen every episode, but I have missed taping a couple, so the guest credit lists may not be totally complete. I have attempted to list the names of all the characters who had speaking roles, although I have not always listed speaking parts, and in several other cases I have listed important, non-speaking characters. If someone discovers that I have placed episodes with the wrong airdate or in the wrong order, or that I have omitted someone important from the guest cast lists, etc., please notify me at my E-mail address above. The SbtB-the College Years episode guide can be found in Part III of this FAQ, and the SbtB-the New Class Episode Guide can be found in Part IV. 1.10) A Note on the Saved by the Bell Knock-Offs: the Spin-Off: Saved by the Bell-The New Class (the SbtB FAQ, pt.4-The New Class), and the Knock-Offs: California Dreams, Running the Halls and Hang Time (separate FAQ's) The success of the Saved by the Bell series inspired its producer Peter Engel and NBC to produce several series that are very similar to Saved by the Bell. Among these are the Saved by the Bell sequel, Saved by the Bell-The College Years (which is dealt with in Part III of the SbtB FAQ); the SbtB spin-off, Saved by the Bell-The New Class (which is dealt with in Part IV of the SbtB FAQ); California Dreams (1992-97); the cancelled Running the Halls (1993) and most recently Hang Time (started in 1995). These last two shows were mostly or completely separate from the original Saved by the Bell, so they are dealt with in their own separate FAQ's: the California Dreams FAQ, the Running the Halls FAQ an the Hang Time Episode Guide. Please see the SbtB FAQ pt.3 or 4, or the California Dreams or Running the Halls FAQ's, or the Hang Time Episode Guide, for more information on these shows. 2.0) The Actors 2.1) How Old Are the Actors? and Personal Info The following are the birthdays, potential real high school graduation class years, and other information on the actors (from Aaron Binns): Mark-Paul Gosselaar: Birthdate: March 1, 1974 Birthplace: Panorama City, CA Current Residence: Valencia, CA Hgt & Whgt: 6' - 185 lbs. You can reach them at (213) 461-9163. The only other fan club addresses I have is the one for Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack). His is: Mark-Paul Gosselaar's Fan Club 3500 W. Olive Ave, Suite 920 Burbank, CA 91505 And, for general information, NBC Productions (which produce(s)(d) SbtB, Cal. Dreams and Running the Halls) is probably a good place to start: NBC Productions, Inc. 330 Bob Hope Drive Burbank, CA 91523 3.0) Miscellanea and Trivia 3.1) Is Zack (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) Dead? Somehow a rumor was started in the spring of 1994 that Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Zack) was dead, and that is why SbtB-the College Years was cancelled. One version has it that Gosselaar got chicken pox, or some other disease, and died. Another has it that Gosselaar was killed in a car or motorcycle accident. THESE RUMORS ARE ABSOLUTELY *UNTRUE*. For one thing, Gosselaar began the filming of the second SbtB TV Movie, "Saved by the Bell: the Wedding" in the summer of 1994, several months *after* he supposedly died. He also guest-starred in several TV shows and TV movies, *after* that. For another, it was Mario Lopez (Slater), not Gosselaar that was in the car accident (it was a minor accident and Lopez was unhurt). Since then, Gosselaar has been in several projects in *every* year since 1994, including up to the present day. So once again, Mark-Paul Gosselaar is *alive* and well. 3.2) What Are the Words to the Theme Song of Saved by the Bell? Several people have asked what the words were to the opening music of Saved by the Bell. Here are the words to the theme song: Well, I wake up in the morning, And the 'larm gives out a warning, And I don't think I'll ever make it on time. By the time I grab my books, And I give myself a look, I'm at the corner, just in time to see the bus fly by. It's all right, 'cos I'm Saved by the Bell If the teacher pops a test, I know I'm in a mess, And my dog ate all my homework last night. Riding low in my chair, She won't know that I'm there, If I can hand it in tomorrow it'll be all right. It's all right, 'cos I'm Saved by the Bell. 3.3) What are the Songs on the Saved by the Bell CD? Fantasy or "flashback" sequences were a common plot device used in SbtB, tOS, particularly in the first two seasons. Here is a list of the episodes that contained fantasies, and a description of the fantasy: Episodes Description of Fantasy -------- ---------------------- 9.1 Zack imagines a goddess-like Kelly sharing detention with him. 9.3 Lisa imagines her father's reaction to the credit card bill; Screech is the devil. 9.5 Screech imagines all the girls want to marry him. 9.8 The girls fantasize that they are all going to marry the hunky substitute, Mr. Tony Crane. 9.9 Kelly imagines running for Homecoming Queen with a large red pimple for a nose. 9.10 Zack imagines the prizes he wins from the bet he has on Slater, a la a game show; and, Slater imagines that the gang comes back for a reunion, and they're all successful, but he's a washed-up professional wrestler. 9.12 Zack imagines being rich; Screech is "Robin Screech", host of the "Lifestyles of the Incredibly Rich and Famous". 9.13 Lisa dreams that she's seeing Screech everywhere! 9.16 Zack imagines losing to the Clegg brothers in the prank war, and Valley Principal Stingwell hands the awards out, including Zack's. 9.18 Zack imagines having a son and watching him grow up. 9.19 Screech imagings he's "Robo Screech, hall monitor of the future", saving Lisa and taking on Neil. 9.20 The gang imagine that they're in a police line-up where Belding is the cop, and Slater is the chameleon, Artie, doling out their sentences. 10.1 Kelly dreams that she being interviewed by Screech as "Geraldo Screech" for being a "woman who loves two men". 10.2 Screech imagines he's "General Screech", the girls are his aides, and he dispatches Butch and wins Molly. 10.3 Belding remembers his days as the "Big Bopper" 10.4 Zack imagines that Kelly and Slater are close at the drive-in in Slater's car, while he and Screech are ignored nearby on Zack's bicycle. 10.5 Screech imagines that his mother comes back to the house as an angel along with Elvis (who looks like Mr. Belding). 10.6 Jessie imagines she's on "the Blind Date Game" with host Zack, and scarry contestants. 10.11 Kelly's sister Nicki Kapowski fantasizes that Zack is the rapping Prince, and Kelly the evil step-sister, in her own version of Cinderella. 10.12 Zack dreams Chief Henry visits him as an angel. 10.14 Zack imagines that he's seeing Kelly everywhere! 11.3 Zack dreams that he's dead, and Screech is the angel who shows him his memorial service. 11.16 The entire episode is Zack's fantasy about the rise and fall of the gang's band "Zack Attack". 3.6.1) In What Episodes Did Zack Use a "Time Out"? Also in early episodes, Zack would use a "time out", which would have the effect of freezing or "time stopping" everyone, except Zack, so that Zack could offer some witty commentary. SbtB stopped having Zack use "time outs" after Grade 11. Here is the list of episodes where Zack used "time outs": Episodes Description of "Time Out" -------- ------------------------- 9.7 Zack uses a "time out" after Slater asks him to talk Mjr.
