Pwwca ("Phooka") is a Celtic spirit, mischievous in nature, a sort of shape-shifting goblin. Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream is based on this figure. Demogorgon (note correct spelling) is a late Roman Imperial demon-god, adopted by early Christian theologians and occasionally showing up in medieval demonology. > more info about NFOL releases (that is, if Holger has recovered from his > stigma wounds after the recent witch-hunts). What it stands for I'm not sure, but I'm positive that some list member more well-versed in occult matters than I am can shed some light on it. As for what NFOL have released, there are two tapes to my knowledge. The most recent one is called "Virtue Of Selfishness" and was put out by the Italian label Slaughter Prod. NFOL are also featured on Releasing Eskimo's 3x7" compilation "Disco Mortem" together with the likes of Merzbow, C.C.C.C., Macronympha, and Grey Wolves. I think Holger@vuz might have some more info about NFOL releases (that is, if Holger has recovered from his stigma wounds after the recent witch-hunts). So what do they sound like? Well, they're a pretty good representative of the Swedish/CMI dark ambient sound, perhaps somewhat more noisy/droney than the rest. I have a snippet from one song off the abovementioned tape on my answering machine, and people say it sounds like the soundtrack music for a horror movie. ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\\\// Marten Sahlen \\//// Email: etxsahm@cyber.ericsson.se \\//// ////\\ Ericsson Telecom AB//\\\\ Memo : eri.etxt.etxsahm //\\\\ \\\\// TN/ETX/XT/U \\//// Phone: +46 8 7196554 \\//// ////\\ 126 25 Stockholm //\\\\ Fax : +46 8 6812958 //\\\\ \\\\// Sweden \\//// Motto: Individualists unite! \\//// ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\ "Throbbing Gristle give the impression of rather taking a picture // // of a guy getting beat up than helping him" - Jim Kerr, 1980 \\ \\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\//// -- unsubscribe requests to coldmeat-l-request@q7.com From HolgerHanrathsvuz@vuz.du.gtn.com Mon Nov 25 16:58:00 1996 From: HolgerHanrathsvuz@vuz.du.gtn.com (HolgerHanrathsvuz@vuz.du.gtn.com) Date: 25 Nov 1996 18:58:00 +0200 Subject: No Festival Of Light > In a previous message, it was said that P/D (B) (What's it mean?) are > now known as No Festival of Light. Well, Mortiis seems to have started he's musical career in 1990 whit a band called Rupturence that played death metal (or so I have read..). After that he (Mortiis) and the guitarrist of their old band formed a new group called Wilt of Belial, that supposedly played slow death/doom. After leaving this group in 1991, Mortiis joined the project that was to become Emperor, only to leave it later. When it was released CMI was not as popular as it is in these days, so some shops in Germany had copies for quite some time. And a friend of mine also held back some copies for his mailorder. But when he stopped the mailorder, he couldn't sell them. So after some time (OK, after quite a long time) he asked me if I would take them back, which I did. So I was able to offer it again. I had no reason to sell it at collectorsprices, so I offered it at a good price. Roger got some copies back from his artists (their free copies), so he was also able to provide some. I admit that it was probably bad timing that both of us started to "flood" the world with these copies, but Roger offered them about three months earlier than I did. Does that sound familiar to you? This just proves how reliable your source is. Facts are: 1. We never released any boxed set of any Wumpscut album (Wumpscut did this on his own label). 2. We did not press a single copy of the Wumpscut album (or any other Wumpscut release) after the contract expired. If we had anything released without holding the rights, why did Wumpscut (or the GEMA) never take any legal actions against us? I am running a fully legal label, so I would not be so stupid to release a bootleg. I have enough of other material to release, so I don't waste my time on illegal releases. > Can I be sure of this? I don't think anyone said anything about these items yet, so here are my impressions... Mental Destruction "Straw" (CMI.47) =================================== It's been a long time since the Durling brothers last offered us sinful mortals salvation through their orthodox industrial music. But fear no more, the third coming of MD has recently arrived, and mighty Lord, what a resurrection! The album opens with "Streams of Time", their contribution to the Karmanik Collection sampler, and possibly my favourite track by *any* CMI band, ever. I do like the two previous albums by MD, but I also think they suffer from sort of a low-fi production, and thus never reach the celestial hights of the aforementioned track. This problem is no more, the purity of the production this time around adds a new dimension of beauty to the inherent harshness of this music. The trademarks of MD are still present: the vocals distorted beyond recognition, and the the harsh metallic percussion. To this, they make a more frequent use of keyboards/organ than before, which lends a strong melodic line to several tracks, like the amazing "Rise". Arcana, Puissance, Sanctum, BDN, MZ.412... they have all released fine albums during 96, but this is my CMI favourite of the year, hands down. "Straw" contains 10 tracks, and running time is 50 minutes. Mortiis "Reisene til Grotter og Odemarker" (CMI.48) =================================================== First a translation of the title, which goes something like "The Journey To Caves and Wastelands" (or maybe "Backwoods" is a better choice of word, I dunno). This is a video, which is a concentrate of the film Mortiis used as backdrop in Erlangen this summer. The box says 30 minutes, but in reality it clocks in at 25 minutes. It's shot in b/w, and the first 5-6 minutes features juxtaposed sequences of tranquil pastoral sceneries. Then for the rest of the time we move to a castle. First there are some exterior shots of towers, walls, drawbridge, etc, and suddenly, when the music shifts in intensity, Mortiis shows up in one of the towers. Then for more or less the rest of the film, we follow him inside the castle... when he's prowling the vaults and archways, and when he's sitting in a large hall reading a book. It's all accompanied by a medley of typical Mortiis music, though I don't from which album it is taken. It is really quite solemn, albeit it borders on the downright cheesy at times. But if you don't get the chance to see Havard live, this has to be the next best thing. To my knowledge the video is so far only released in European PAL format, but I think Roger & Co are trying to hunt down a licensee in the US that can take care of the conversion to NTSC format. ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\\\// Marten Sahlen \\//// Email: etxsahm@cyber.ericsson.se \\//// ////\\ Ericsson Telecom AB//\\\\ Memo : eri.etxt.etxsahm //\\\\ \\\\// TN/ETX/XT/U \\//// Phone: +46 8 7196554 \\//// ////\\ 126 25 Stockholm //\\\\ Fax : +46 8 6812958 //\\\\ \\\\// Sweden \\//// Motto: Individualists unite! \\//// ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\ "Throbbing Gristle give the impression of rather taking a picture // // of a guy getting beat up than helping him" - Jim Kerr, 1980 \\ \\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\//// -- unsubscribe requests to coldmeat-l-request@q7.com From wakingdreamwkgdream@bway.net Fri Nov 22 09:05:48 1996 From: wakingdreamwkgdream@bway.net (wakingdreamwkgdream@bway.net) Date: Fri, 22 Nov 1996 04:05:48 -0500 Subject: valefor=bdn? anyone else think valefor is bdn/roger under another name? either that or they are *heavily* influenced by "great death"... still a good cd if you like black power-electronics. i'd listen to this over whitehouse any day. in fact i think it's more listenable than the last bdn "innerwar", but can't touch the amazing "necrose evangelicum" or "slaughterhouse". ........................................................................... http://www.bway.net/~wkgdream -- unsubscribe requests to coldmeat-l-request@q7.com From S.Sarveystone@u.washington.edu Fri Nov 22 02:57:02 1996 From: S.Sarveystone@u.washington.edu (S.Sarveystone@u.washington.edu) Date: Thu, 21 Nov 1996 18:57:02 -0800 (PST) Subject: Butchers (the feud) Fellow Meaters, In regards to these recent disagreements, I should probably just look the other way and delete them. Most of the bands are still signed by CMI, some > of them are signed by us, so that would also be no problem (copyrights). Aside from the fact that it would be insulting to those that bought the release in the first place, and that there is more of a "mystique" and urgency to a limited edition of 666 copies, especially when it concerns a cruxial era in CMI history, and has been thought to be out of print for a number of years. If this is not a reprint, why is it that this has not been continuously available for the last few years? I am sure that many people have requested copies of this and have been very disappointed at its unavailabilty. That would, to me, constitute an excellent reason for reprinting them, but still does not explain why you would not have kept them available if they were not reprints. While I appreciate the fact that it is back on the market (just got mine yesterday--tasty!), I still question the timing. > > > I would be overjoyed to be proven wrong on this, especially as I, too, > > have just ordered a copy. Comments, anyone? > I hope this was enough information to make your decision easier. > And by the way, did you order it because you wanted to have the music or > because you wanted to have a rare item? I bought it because I wanted the music, what sort of a question is that? I simply wanted to pass on what seemed an important piece of information to my list mates. It is hearsay and was presented as such from the first. You have still not convinced me, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt regardless. I will not and did not call you a liar, as I would have no proof to make such an accusation. I stand by my original post, as well as the counter-arguments that I have made to your explanations. It simply seems that rather than address directly my hypothesis that these copies are reprints, you chose to accuse me of attacking Roger, which I would never do without a damn good reason, and offer as proof of the genuine-ness of these copies assertions that prove nothing. If I were going to run off additional copies of a limited-edition release, I would not change a damn thing, not even the name of a distributor with whom I no longer dealt. That seems obvious. You have proven nothing, and I have proven nothing. Not ture, the Butchers are from the original run (I sold them to Soleilmoon, so I shoud know). > Vuz records is reprinting this to make some cash, pure and simple. Not that simple, because all the publishing rights and therefore the right to reprint it are owned by Cold Meat Industry. We are not able to reprint it without the help of CMI (they have to give the order at the pressing plant). So to make some cash, I would have to convince Mr. Karmanik himself to rip his customers and artists, just to give me the chance to sell some copies. Does this sound like a possibility? I don't think so. Unless, of course, if you also accuse Roger of dishonesty. > But have no illusions as to the "genuineness" of this release. > I have it on excellent authority from someone in this business with whom > I have dealt for several years, and whose opinion I trust implicitly, > and he says that there are subtle differences in packaging between > copies he was selling several years ago (of which he still has one in > his personal collection) and the copies currently flooding distributors. So who is this mysterious "authority"? There can of course be differences in various details, even if a CD is from the same pressing run. The colors of the booklet may change a bit, this depends on how carefull the printer works (there can be rest of other colors in the machine, or they poured not enough color into it, or too late - same goes for the CD print). As an example: I have copies of one of our releases from the same pressing run with a nearly black & white cover and with a quite redish cover - the original should have been a brown with a slight red touch. You can recognise "my" copies quite easily. They were stored in a cellar that was not 100% dry, so the inlay card can have some small "waves". And if you look at the back of the inlay card, you will find a company stated as the exclusive distributor. Neither we nor CMI do work with this company any longer, be sure that we would have eleminated their name if we had it repressed. And why should we do a secret repressing? It is sold at a regular price. I don't think that most of the people buy it because it is rare, but because they want the music. So it would be no problem for us to do an official repressing, wouldn't it? Most of the bands are still signed by CMI, some of them are signed by us, so that would also be no problem (copyrights). > I would be overjoyed to be proven wrong on this, especially as I, too, > have just ordered a copy. Arcana went on first. This was their very first live concert, so I got the impression that the members were a bit nervous. But their solemn medieval-inspired music worked just fine, never mind that it sometimes sounds like a carbon copy of Dead Can Dance around "Spleen and Ideal" and "Within the Realm...". I couldn't believe it when they lined up 5 people on stage, all of them doing vocals while the music was on DAT. The core of the band, Peter and Ida, did the main vocals, while three other guys did backing vocals (which unfortunately was barely audible). They concluded with their best song, "Song Of Mourning", which is on the "And Even The Wolves" sampler as well as on their own debut album. Then Raison d'Etre played for about an hour. Peter Andersson is an engima, in that his live sound is totally different than the studio sound. On stage he's just grinding... it's harsh, heavy, LOUD, and some passages even reminded me of Daniel Menche. Oh, if you can't tell, this change is for the better imho. The sacral elements are still there, but used more sparse than on the albums. The two last songs, two semi-funky pieces, were picked from the old "Apres nous le Deluge" tape, since he's apparently going to put it out on CD sometime soon. Finally, The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath A Cloud did their first ever show in Sweden, and I just wish that more people than the crowd of a mere 100 or so had been there to see it. The band members seemed to be in a much better mood than when I saw them in Mainz in April, and did a great performance though it only clocked in at around 40 minutes. I guess a few songs were new, at least I didn't recognize them, but they were definitely on par with the older favourites. I picked up the TMLHBAC - Deutsch Nepal split CD "A Night In Fear" which I can't recommend enough. 3 tracks, 30 minutes, and it's a tremendously fruitful collaboration that shows both bands from their best sides. Later in the night followed bacchanalian activities with a great deal of CMI celebrities and various hangarounds like myself involved, and I'm pretty sure the guests from Austria were impressed by the abilities - other than musical - that certain persons sported... ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\\\// Marten Sahlen \\//// Email: etxsahm@cyber.ericsson.se \\//// ////\\ Ericsson Telecom AB//\\\\ Memo : eri.etxt.etxsahm //\\\\ \\\\// TN/ETX/XT/U \\//// Phone: +46 8 7196554 \\//// ////\\ 126 25 Stockholm //\\\\ Fax : +46 8 6812958 //\\\\ \\\\// Sweden \\//// Motto: Individualists unite! \\//// ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\ "Throbbing Gristle give the impression of rather taking a picture // // of a guy getting beat up than helping him" - Jim Kerr, 1980 \\ \\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\//// -- unsubscribe requests to coldmeat-l-request@q7.com From JoaoLealjleal@lnec.pt Tue Nov 19 13:44:07 1996 From: JoaoLealjleal@lnec.pt (JoaoLealjleal@lnec.pt) Date: Tue, 19 Nov 1996 13:44:07 +0000 Subject: Butchers Mikael Stavvstrand wrote: > Consono (from tape Onus Uteri, sound source) > 9. Here is the determining factor: Germany has too many damn concerts I need to be at!!! I'd like to be somewhere where there are festivals (or at least close to) and a good night life. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to where a good place to stay might be? Also, its a bit soon but related. In '98-'99 I'm looking into staying a year in Germany to study. The same applies with these following cities, can anyone recommend a good place to stay? Aachen, Berlin, Duisburg, Freiburg, Giessen, Mainz, and Tubingen. When I'm there for a year, I'd also like nature to come into play. Please, no matter what country you are in, feel free to recommend some nice sites where I can sit down and relax and not be reminded that mankind exists on the face of this planet. Beautiful scenes worth seeing, I know you've got some over there. I'm sure I'll follow it up again next year when deciding where to stay in '98 and '99. Thanks for any help. Tomas Pettersson told me the other day that Ordo's new album has been postponed several times, and that it will probably be released in the beginning of next year. Well Jamie, based on what you've revealed about your listening habits (both now and before), I'd say go for anything with Deutsch Nepal. The "Benevolence" album is the best IMHO, but you really can't go wrong with DN. Since you like Shinjuku Thief, chances are you'll appreciate In Slaughter Natives too. Check out either "Purgate..." or "Enter Now the World", but stay away from "Sacrosancts Bleed". I like MZ.412 a lot, but my advice is that you avoid them. Also in my opinion, "Karmanik Collection" is the superior compilation, compared to both "And Even the Wolves..." and "In the Butcher's Backyard". Since you didn't like the "Death Odours" comp, I recommend you spend your $$$ on something else than "Butcher's Backyard". You'll most likely find it boring too. As for Controlled Bleeding, my expertise in them is sadly quite diminutive. But I know that "Golgotha" finds them venturing into sort of the mock-medieval middle east territory where Dead Can Dance and the likes have been before, which might appeal to you. The other C.B. CD I haven't heard. Good luck now with your purchases. ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\\\// Marten Sahlen \\//// Email: etxsahm@cyber.ericsson.se \\//// ////\\ Ericsson Telecom AB//\\\\ Memo : eri.etxt.etxsahm //\\\\ \\\\// TN/ETX/XT/U \\//// Phone: +46 8 7196554 \\//// ////\\ 126 25 Stockholm //\\\\ Fax : +46 8 6812958 //\\\\ \\\\// Sweden \\//// Motto: Individualists unite! \\//// ////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\ \\ "Throbbing Gristle give the impression of rather taking a picture // // of a guy getting beat up than helping him" - Jim Kerr, 1980 \\ \\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\//// -- unsubscribe requests to coldmeat-l-request@q7.com From ennui@dystopia.fiennui Wed Nov 6 08:40:26 1996 From: ennui@dystopia.fiennui (ennui@dystopia.fiennui) Date: Wed, 06 Nov 1996 00:40:26 -0800 Subject: raison d'etre John T Robicheau wrote: > > Hi > > I really enjoy Raison d'Etre. Atomine Elektrine has a somewhat new age touch to it, mixing soft techno-like rythms whit some rather weird samples (I'm refering to the horse in particular....), throwing in a pinch or two of ambient for good measure. It's rather soft, but not in a negative sense of the word. Still not something you'd expect on CMI though. The man behind Raison d'Etre has described it as "more like a calm, cold soundtrack". Recommendable. Svasti-ayanam has as far as I know only released one split-tape whit Raison d'Etre on Italian Slaughter Productions. Svasti-ayanam sounds heavily influenced by Indian music (strong ryhms et.c.), but it seems to have been only a temporary project, sadly enough. I don't know if Slaughter prod. still sells the tape. Usually it is to ask advice about purchases I have considered. I shant break tradition tonite! I enjoy things along the lines of Lustmord, Raison d'Etre, Muslimgauze, SPK's "Zamia," Shinjuku Thief's "Witch" series, the first Morthond album, virtually everything on "and even wolves hid their teeth" except the heavy tracks at the end, Memorandum, and a variety of other dark ambient music. I did not much care for the "death odours" comp, as I found it pretty boring. I find "Karmanik Collection" inferior to "wolves..." These are the things I am considering purchasing: Controlled Bleeding "Golgotha" "Songs from the Ashes" In Slaughter Natives "Purgate my Stain" Mz412 "Burning the Temple of God" Deutsh Nepal (?) various artists "In the Butcher's Backyard" is this last one better than "Karmanik Collection"? Specific comments on any of the above albums would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance. You folks have always been very helpful in the past, and I hope that I can someday give advice on things in my collection to help one of you... More of a natural thing. Svasti-ayanam "The Ring of Isvarah" MC (split with Rd'E) harder and more industrial than Rd'E. Also using a lot of rhythms and tribal percussion. Stratvm Terror "Germinal Chamber" MC, "Pariah Demise" CD, ..? punishing death industrial, not the harshest available, but quite vicious. Atomine Elektrine "Elemental Severance" CD, ..? I'm not very familiar with this. I believe this is a dance type of thing. IMO, unlike what I found on TMLHBaC albums, the vocals were consistantly good. On one track, her voice reminds me immensley of sanctum's female vocals on the "dragonfly" song. While relaxing to our local goth/industrial radio show last night I heard a really intense track that played a couple of bits from Dawn Of The Dead under dark and threatening music. Then I got lost in the back-announcing bit, but mentioned was a BDN track off the Great Death box (disc 1 according to the presenter). I think it was called Evisceration, or Eviscerated, don't ask which one, I'd been working on an essay far too long to keep thinking. The track I loved so much sounds just of the CMI type and quality, and I really need to know if it actually was BDN. Perhaps it was listening to this after watching Dawn that prompted Mikael Niva to sell his Great Death box. Too damn scary for him?
