In the interest of readability, and also because of time management issues for the hosts, we have decided to split our overall response into the following sections. Each section will be sent out as a separate post. 1. RJGK-34 Answers, statistics, and results (presented in this post) 2. RJGK-34 Overall impressions (from respondents and hosts) 3. RJGK-34 Annotations (songwise comments and details) We don't know as yet how detailed this post will be. It is a simple matter of finding the time to do a complete job. (This may be a week or two). 4. RJGK-34 Where to find the songs. Again, this is based on our limited knowledge of what is out there. Post 1: RJGK-34 Answers, Results, Statistics Let us begin by thanking all the participants. Through the mix of good- natured flak and unfettered appreciation, your feedback and your responses are what made this exercise totally worthwhile for us, and we guess it did for you too, Your individual comments will be part of posts 2 and 3. Here is a quick 1-paragraph summary of the sentiment we gathered from your statements. It is all paraphrased, of course. The quotes happen in the next 2 posts. . Good quiz, but did it have to be so tough? . Where can we find these songs? . Good representation along multiple dimensions. . Didn't realize he did so much work for movies destined to be flops. No wonder we never got to hear any of these songs. . Are you going to create a set of tapes with this songs? . Thanks for the opportunity to reminisce the master's work . By creating 2 separate categories, you have generated interest at multiple levels. . The quiz was really, really tough. The clues seemed to be holding back information as opposed to helping people who have not heard the song before. . Gotta go! Running out of time. Spent enough time on this quiz already .....and so on. It seemed clear to us (or are we just dreaming?) that a lot of participants actually got into the quiz, and turned the exercise into a real treasure hunt. For us, that was the greatest reward. We apologize for the difficulty level. On to some salient points re. the responses: 1. We have 23 entries from a total of 33 individuals. 2. The first entry arrived within 24 hours of posting the quiz. Surendra Rajak gets that award. 3. One of the entries was dictated to Pradeep over the phone. Is that a first? Don't know. Thanks to Ramesh Hariharan and Rajendra Ingle for that response. 4. A few clues were answered correctly by ALL participants. 5. Every clue was guessed correctly by at least one entry. 6. A Statistics line is provided with each answer. That simply shows the number of entries that provided the correct answer for that clue. 7. Not a single entry had an explicit statement re. whether or not they wanted to play the FANATIC category. There were some groups however that did not try it at all. As a result, we assume that any entry that attempted even one clue in the FANATIC section had a desire to be part of it. 8. One aspect of judging the answers WAS tough. Several people guessed the correct movie names, and sometimes identified the singers too. In one case, they even remembered words from the middle of another stanza. It became clear that these participants knew the song in question, but were just not able to remember the starting words. We will acknowledge those items in the "annotations" post, but to be consistent across the board, these answers have not been credited as "correct". Sorry about that. And now the list of entries (in chronological order of receipt): Surendra Rajak Ketan Dholakia Snehal B. Oza Girish Yadav Mr. And Mrs. Pintu Diwana Ambrish Sundaram and Sandeep Joshi Vandana Venkatesan Anand Tiwari Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh Balaji and Malini Murthy Vinod Jairaj Ashish Bokil Shalini Razdan, Chetan Vinchhi and Ashok Dhareshwar Anup Pandey Satish Subramanian Suneeta Donepudi Prince Kohli and Neeraj Malhotra Harish Suvarna Ajay Nerurkar and Veena Nayak Preetham Gopalaswamy and Samiuddin Mohammed Neha Desai Ramesh Hariharan and Rajendra Ingle Kalyan Kolachala Number of entries = 23; Total number of individuals = 33 CATEGORY 1: FOR THE FAN 1. Kiran pari gagari chhalkaaye Jyot ka pyaasa, pyaas bujhaaye baanhein phaila, O dukhiyaare ... This song marks the start of the day when the heroine appears in this movie for the first time ... however this song also marks the end of the movie. The background chorus and the instrumentation are simply awesome. Song: jaago.. jaago.. jaago.. jag ujiyaara chhaae, man ka andhera jaae, kiraNo.n ki raani gaae jaago he, mere man, mohan, pyaare jaago mohan pyare, jaago navayug chhoome, naina tihaare jaago Movie: Jaagte Raho (1956) Starring: Raj Kapoor, Pradip Kumar, Sumitra, Smriti Biswas, Motilal, Nargis Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata and chorus Statistics: 20/23 2. Sansaar ki raani hai tu, raaja hai meraa laaDla duniya hai meri god mein, poora hua sapnaa mera What a lullaby! An unusual Salil song as it is limited to a very small range of notes. However the combination of Lata's voice, the melody, and the rupak taal is hard to match. Song: aa jaa ri aa nidnidyaa tu aa jhilamil sitaaro.n se utar aa.Nkho.n me.n aa Movie: Do Bigha Zameen (1953) Starring: Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, (Meena Kumari) Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata Statistics: 18/23 3. Main diye ki aisi baati jal na saki jo, bujh bhi naa paati Aa mil mere jeevan saathi, O..... This song will live through generations of Indian music lovers, and they will in turn remember it for many lives to come. The movie is probably the best known and liked soundtrack of all time - an exaggeration all right, but as long as it serves the purpose, we can argue about the use of such superlatives. It is not clear how many readily available versions of the song have this stanza. Song: Aa ja re pardesi, mai.n to kab se khaDi is paar ye a.Nkhiyaa.n thak gai panth nihaar Movie: Madhumati (1958) Starring: Dilip Kumar, Vaijayanthimala Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata Statistics: 23/23 4. kaanch koi, maaTi koi, rang birange pyaale pyaas lagey to ek baraabar, jismein paani Daale re ... Calcutta fans who have seen this film will recognize the Hooghly in the background, and yet, the song is about another river. A great movie based on a wonderful story by a Nobel Laureate. It is also the first released movie song for the lyricist (an interesting story goes with that bit of detail - perhaps to be included in the ANSWERS post). Song: ga.ngaa aai kahaa.N se, ga.ngaa jaai kahaa.N re Movie: Kabuliwala (1961) Starring: Balraj Sahni, Usha Kiran, Sajjan, Baby Farida.. Lyrics: Gulzar Singer: Hemanta Mukherji Statistics: 22/23 5. tumko pukaare mere man ka papeeharaa, meeThi meeThi agnee mein, jaley mora jiyaraa Acknowledged by some as Lata's best under the maestro's direction, this song should need no hints or clues. One of 6 rain references in this quiz, this one is from an early '60s Bimal Roy classic. As simple as the movie was, the leading lady went on to set fashion trends. Song: o sajanaa, barakhaa bahaar aai, ras ki phuhaar laai a.Nkhiyo.n me.n pyaar laai, o sajanaa Movie: Parakh (1960) Starring: Motilal, Sadhna Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata Statistics: 23/23 6. hain to sanam, lekin, patthar ke sanam yahaaN pyaar waali, narmee adaaoN mein kahaaN honthon se dekh inke, Takraaye naa teraa pyaala A '60s movie. This was the one of the very few occasions Salil paired with this very popular lyricist. And he turned the simple lyrics into extraordinary tunes, tunes which also caused extraordinary 'confusion' in the not too distant past on RMIM during the annual Rafi-KK-War-fest :-) BTW the flute (Salil's favorite instrument) piece used during the prelude of a Lata song from this movie is perhaps one of the most creative and complex flute pieces ever used in film songs. Song: koi sone ke dil_waala, koi chaandi ke dil_waala sheeshe ka hai matawaale tera dil mehfil ye nahi.n teri deewaane kahi.n chal Movie: Maya (1961) Starring: Dev Anand, Mala Sinha Lyrics: Majrooh Singer: Rafi Statistics: 21/23 7. kiske iishaare, mujhko yahaaN le aaye kiski hansee ne raah mein phool khilaaye A swinging Talat solo, which gives us another chance to repeat a hypothesis, proposed before on RMIM: "Salil ne Talat ko hansanaa sikhaaya" :-) Song: jhoome re ... neela ambar jhoome, dharatee ko choome re Movie: Ek Gaaon Ki Kahaani (1957) Starring: Mala Sinha, Abhi Bhattacharya, Nirupa Roy Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Talat Statistics: 15/23 8. haathoN meiN tere mera haath rahey dil se jo niklee hai wo baat rahey mera tumhaara saaree zindagi kaa saath rahey Another datapoint in support of the 'hypothesis' proposed above. One day you will all agree: us ne theek hi kahaa tha. :-) This song is also a very good example of rich inter-ludes in Salil songs. In fact, it will not be an overstate- ment to call him, "Interlude Samraat". Song: aahaa rimjhim ke ye pyaare pyaare geet liye Movie: Usne Kahaa Thaa (1960) Starring: Nanda, Sunil Dutt Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata, Talat Statistics: 22/23 9. meri chhoTi behnaa, naazoN ki paali shehzaadi jitni bhi jaldi ho main kar doongaa uski shaadi achchha hai ye balaa hamaari jaaye dooje gaaon mein ... Very few composers, if any, can claim to have composed tunes for more Indian languages than Salil. Additionally, folksy tunes were a hallmark of Salil. These folk tunes were derived from the extreme corners of the vast landscape of India, ranging from panjabi, to bengali .. marathi .. malalyaalam to nepali as well. The song above is based on a nepali folk tune and is popular even to this date. This was most probably the first KK song for Salil. Song: chhoTaa saa ghar hogaa, baadaloN ki chaa.N.oN meiN aashaa diwaani man meiN bansuri bajaaye Movie: Naukri (1954) Starring: Kishore Kumar, Sheila Ramaani Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Kishore, Usha Statistics: 21/23 10. donoN jahaaN Se, door yahaan bhaTak rahi hoon, jaane kahaaN main jaane kahaan main It is the second song of the lost soul genre to appear in this quiz. This one however, must have been easier to see at night. We think of it as yet another great from the Lata-Salil team, but we would not dare compare it with the other lost soul song on the list! Good songs, characteristically brilliant soundtrack, but somehow, it did not click with the audience. Other songs from this mid-'60s movie were even less known. Song: Saathi re, tujh bin jiyaa udaas re Movie: Poonam Ki Raat (1965) Starring: Manoj Kumar, Kumud Chhugaani Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata Statistics: 17/23 11. O vekkhe panDit gyaani tyaani, dayaa taram de bande raam naam jap dete, khaandey gowshaala de chande Not even the likes of Khaiyaam, Roshan, Madan Mohan, or OP Nayyar have come anywhere near this kind of ultra honest Punjabi presentation. The composer resists any kind of Westernization of the rhythm or background music. An immortal production from the '50s. Song: Oy ai.nwe duniyaa dewe duhaai, jhooTha paaundi shor te apNe dil toN puchh ke vekkho, kauN nain hai chor te ki main jhooTh bolya........ Movie: Jaagte Raho(1956) Starring: Motilal, Sumitra, Smriti Biswas, Raj Kapoor, Nargis Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Rafi, Balbir Statistics: 13/23 12. Jogan jaisee laage, naa soye naa jaagey, gali gali mein, jaaye bhikhaaran ..... Borrowing a modicum of an old Nazrul Islam piece, this Gulzar song from the early '70s is set as a Bhairav variant, something the maestro has done a few other times in his career. Lata knowingly mispronounces a certain consonant here, and creates an adorable effect in the process! Quite possibly among the last of Lata's gems composed by Sir Salil. The last word of the second line has been deliberately dropped. Song: Roj akeli aaye, roj bechaari jaaye Movie: Mere Apne (1971) Starring: Meena Kumari, Vinod Khanna, Shotgun Sinha Lyrics: Gulzar Singer: Lata Statistics: 18/23 13. tum agar jaao kabhi, jaao kahiN waqt se kehnaa zaraa, wo Thahar jaaye yahiN wo ghaDi..... wo ghaDi, yahin rahey, haaye jaaye naa It's hard to find too many songs with this amount of melody. And who else could sing it but the melody queen: Lata! The movie turned a UP Bhaiyya into a 'baabu moshaay' and it had a lasting impact on him, as he went on to become the most loved 'jaamaai baabu' for Bengalis. Song: Naa, jiyaa laage naa Movie: Anand (1970) Starring: Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Sumita Sanyal, Seema, Ramesh Deo Lyrics: Gulzar Singer: Lata Statistics: 23/23 14. sang sang chaley mere, maare aage peechhay phere samjhoon main tere iraade dosh tera hai ye to, har din jab dekho kartee ho jhooThe vaade tu naa jaane, diwaane, dikhaaoon kaise tujhe main ye dil ki lagan This song was a rage around 76, which was also about the time Yesudas descended on Hindi cinema. This is also one of those rare songs when Salil chose Asha over Lata. It may be hard for one to understand when Salil (or SDB or CR for that matter) chose Asha over Lata. This was not always for 'nat-khat' songs or 'cabaret' numbers. We recently come across another semi-serious Asha song for Salil from a 1981 film. Additionally there are few serious Bengali solos by Asha for Salil. Song: Jaan-e-man, jaan-e-man, tere do nayan (1976) Movie: Chhoti si baat Starring: Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha, Ashok Kumar, Asrani Lyrics: Yogesh Singer: Asha, Yesudas Statistics: 23/23 15. meri khataa ma-aaf, main, bhoolay se aa gayaa yehaan varnaa mujhe bhi hai khabar, meraa nahin hai ye jahaan Doob chalaa thaa neend mein, achchhaa kiyaa, jagaa diyaa. The mellow male (solo) voice handles the variations with grace, and the counterpoint of the string section follows the singer - like a shadow! The song bears out the reality of full-bodied orchestration. It does NOT have to be intrusive. Yet another grand soundtrack from the early '60s. Song: aa.nsoo samajh ke kyooN mujhe, aa.n.kh se tumne giraa diyaaa Movie: Chhaaya (1961) Starring: Sunil Dutt, Asha Parekh Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Singer: Talat Statistics: 21/23 16. ik din woh maa se bolaa, kyooN phooNkti hai choolhaa kyooN naa roTiyoN ka, PeD hum lagaa leiN aam toDeiN , roti toDeiN, roTi-aam khaa leiN ... This song ends rather abruptly, but this was quite a popular KK song. Based on a konkani folk tune. This '50s movie also featured the singing voice of a famous actor. Song: munna baDaa pyaara, ammi kaa dulaara Movie: Musaafir (1957) Starring: Usha Kiran, Dilip Kumar, Kishore Kumar Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Kishore Statistics: 21/23 17. BazaaroN ke bhaao ... bazaaroN ke bhaao ... haan bazaaroN ke bhaao, mere taau se baDey makaanoN pe pagaDi waale sasur khaDe buDDhi bhookh marti naheeN zindaa hai abhi koi in buzurgoN se kaise laDey ... The amount of symbolism used in this song is unparallelled, except perhaps by this lyricist's own another song. This movie was about youth unrest under the direction of a respected lyricist G. Song: haalchaal TheekThaak hai Movie: Mere Apne (1971) Starring: Vinod Khanna, Shotgun Sinha, Meena Kumari Lyrics: Gulzar Singer: Kishore, Mukesh, chorus Statistics: 11/23 18. tere ghungraale kaale, baalon se kaali raat ne aaj meri, neend churaa li to se hi pyaar karoon, teraa intezaar karoon tere bin jhooThaa moraa har sapnaa A duet from the '50s whose starting bars got reused in another Salil gem from the same decade. The movie was directed by one of several Bimal Roy understudies, and includes the leading classical composition from the maestro's limited family of the genre. The male singer, a great friend of Sir Salil's, sang several Bengali songs for him, and surprisingly, very few Hindi ones. Song: jhirjhir jhirjhir badarvaa barsay, ho kaare kaare Movie: Parivaar (1956) Starring: Jairaj, Usha Kiran Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata, Hemant Statistics: 14/23 19. Haara huaa thaa andheron kaa raahi, manzil se pehle hi neend aa rahi thi tum door le kar chaley aaye varnaa mere charaaghon se lau jaa rahi thi tere liyee.. jeete hain hum, dil jaantaa hai With apologies for repeating a clue that has appeared in a recent quiz, we find this early '60s duet simply irresis-tible. Another one of six rain songs in the quiz, it may have been the only Jhaptaal meter used by the maestro for Hindi movies. Here is a good sample of a classical melody where the overall orchestration and effect supercedes the classical-ness. Lata stretches her voice to reach the high note. The movie was almost designed to fail. Credit goes to EMI for at least preserving the music for posterity. About time too! Song: saawan ki raatoN mein, aisaa bhi hotaa hai Movie: Prempatra (1962) Starring: Shashi Kapoor, Sadhana Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Singer: Talat, Lata Statistics: 12/23 20. Gol mol jhol motay laala shaukeen, tond mein chhipaayein hain chiraagh-E-alladeen, teen ko hameshaa karte aaye saaDhe teen Perhaps the most absurd movie led by this singer-hero, it has his voice in ALL the songs. Shailendra's creative gibberish is clearly a product of love and labour. Particu-larly in the song above, the meter never falters. Overall: great soundtrack from the early '60s - a ran-dom collage of several styles. In other songs from the movie, we hear Lata doing her version of operatic coloratura (well, not quite that, but the effect is pleasing), Geeta Dutt singing her inimitably drunken and bloozy swing, the Latin rhythm coming in from nowhere, and just plain Bengali folk music spiced up with Western counterpoint. Cover-to-cover nonsense. Highly recommended! Song: cheel cheel chillaa ke kajri sunaay Movie: Half Ticket (1962) Starring: Kishore, Madhubala, Pran Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Kishore Statistics: 14/23 21. Yakeen hai mujhko meraa pyaar na rooThega kabhi, Saaz-E-dil ka koi bhi taar naa TooTegaa kabhi dil ke Is taar ki jhankaar ke sang, baDhte baDhte ye kadam, manzilon pe khud hi pahunch jaayenge Brilliant execution of a duet where Lata covers the upper octave in a role normally reserved for Sabita Chowdhury. Another early '60s entry. Whatever happened to the soundtrack? From what we recall, the film only had bril- liant songs. The male singer here, sometimes criticized for his limited abilities, carries it off perfectly. Song: Mere khwaaboN meiN khayaaloN mein chhupe, ek din meet mere, meri gali saath chale aayenge Movie: Honeymoon (1961) Starring: Manoj, Saeeda Khan Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Lata, Mukesh Statistics: 6/23 22. O...... Koi nahin teraa, saathi hain sab dhan ke samjhe dukh naa tere, koi man ke matlab ke sab hain tere yaar yehaan A grand but unknown duet from the early '70s. The female singer, normally heard in high-pitch harmony along with the Calcutta choir, actually sings part of the lyrics. The song has strong hints of "dharti kahay pukaar ke", and the movie, although (or possibly because) it was directed by a Bimal Roy student, did not amount to much in terms of ticket sales. Nor did the songs. At least EMI caught it right in time. Song: yahaaN ab kyaa rehnaa, kisi se kyaa kehnaa chal de wahaaN, tujhko milay, pyaar jahaaN Movie: Annadaata (1972) Starring: Anil Dhawan, Joya Bhaduri, Om Prakash Lyrics: Yogesh Singer: Manna Dey, Sabita Chowdhury, Chorus Statistics: 3/23 23. TooTte sajte rahey, har ghaDi chubhte rahey, sheeshoN jaise sapne mere inhi sapnon ke liye, hum andheron mein jiye ab ummedon ke diye ban kar jagmagaayenge The concept of 'tootate .. chubhate ... sheeshoN jaise sapne' expressed in this verse is too complicated for typi-cal bollywood lyricists, who would rather deal with 'ishq .... dil or ... sanam'. This lyricist was one of Salil's favorites in later years. So was the male singer of this duet. However, much to our surprise and disappointment, this extremely talented singer, was on decline by now (1979-80) in the Hindi film world, whereas, he continued his ascent in the South. This is a duet with Lata. The film had Shabana A and Shekhar K in leading roles. Song: Hum nahiN dukh se ghabraayeNge Movie: Jeena Yahaan (1979) Starring: Shekhar Kapoor, Shabaana Aazmi Lyrics: Yogesh Singer: Lata, Yesudas Statistics: 10/23 CATEGORY 2: FOR THE FANATIC 24. Yaad unki jahaan aaye Ek nashaa sa chhalak jaaye Main sambhaaloon dil ko, dil mujhe samjhaaye Jab rut khilay, aisaa saathi milay, hosh mein kyon aayen Sabita Chowdhury teams up here with yet another male lead. Only this time, she actually sings the notes of the inter- lude as opposed to just providing background harmony. This movie from the early '70s was directed by a long-standing Bimal Roy associate, and an inveterate Salil Chowdhury admirer. The movie flopped, and the songs remain largely unknown. This one may have been the exception, yet another miraculous gift from the maestro! Song: Aayee ghir ghir saawan ki kaali kaali ghaTaayeN jhoom jhoom chaleiN, bheegi bheegi hawaaeiN Aise mein man mere kuchh to kaho, kuchh to kaho, chup naa raho Movie: Anokhaa Dhaan (1972) Starring: Anil Dhawan, Archana Lyrics: Yogesh Singer: Kishore, Sabita Statistics: 2 correct responses 25. Safar zindagi kaa, nayee zindagi kaa, chalo mere pyaaron, machalte hue BichhaD jaane waalon, arey bholay bhaalon, kahaan reh gayee tum, sambhalte hue ho ho ho........ Jo duniyaa pe chaaye, jo muD ke aaye, hain is kaarvaan mein wohi diljaley A marching tune influenced by German and East European music makers. Greedily propagandized by the Bolsheviks, and systematically stubbed out by the Nazis, it is entirely amazing how Sir Salil became familiar with the orchestral work of Knipper, Eisler, Hindemith and other contemporaries. The movie above comes to us from the production house that did 10 others with the maestro, and is based on what may arguably be among the best Hindi short stories ever. Two leading male voices urge the chorus AND the unsuspecting Sikh soldier on - into a foreign war. Yet another superb soundtrack from yet another box-office disaster. Song: chalte hi jaana, ho chalte hi jaana, jahaaN tak aaj ye raat chaley Movie: Usne Kahaa Thaa (1960) Starring: Nanda, Sunil Dutt Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Rafi, Manna Dey, chorus Statistics: 8 correct responses 26. Gayee ik din piyaa sang main Aarey dekhe rangeen pyaare nazaarey, Lagaa phoolon ke des mein aayee, Gayee aagey to dekhi Powai The Laavani has been favoured mainly by Maharashtrian composers of Hindi songs. For Sir Salil, such interstate language and music transitions presented no barriers at all. This female singer has done limited work with the maestro. More's the pity! The two Mangeshkar sisters have lit up night and day for us through the ages. They get equal bil-ling in this film. The movie was a flop, but Salil Da made history by featuring (for another song in the movie) yet another popular female singer, perhaps the only time he used that voice. Song: Meri aur unki preet puraani, salsal jaaoon ya mumbai la mumbai nagri sabse pyaari, yaheen basey man meet meraa Aa re, raama ji, ji, ji, ji ji ji Movie: Chaand Aur Sooraj (1965) Starring: Tanuja, Dharmendra Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Asha Statistics: 4 correct responses 27. Aag lagi hai dil mein lekin, dekh rahaa hai aankh ka paani sholon ke sang behti nadiyaan, nikal raheen hain ek hi ghar se Despite his fondness for the Indian Classical motif, there are very few classically oriented melodies in the master's Hindi repertoire. Even at that, most of them got harmonized and/or orchestrated into something other than pure classi-cal. The song above is an exception. A '60s solo made for swinging in a couple of 'em rain showers? Hardly. But it certainly has a couple of 'em Malhaars to match (Sur and Gaud Malhaar, possibly?) - fascinating! Song: Ek samay par do barsaateiN Movie: Jhoola (1962) Starring: Sunil Dutt, Vyjayanthimala Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Singer: Manna Dey Statistics: 11 correct responses 28. door door door jahaan, uTh rahaa hai ab dhuaan, meraa wohin par thaa ashiaa(n), taaron ki jhilmil chhaaon mein An exquisite and rare Hindi solo performance by this singer mostly known to our listeners as a leading choir presence. Wonder if she ever harboured pleasant dreams of becoming a higher profile solo artist. In the end, her main medium remained Bengali film/non-film, and the Calcutta choir. Turning up dismal numbers at the box-office yet again, this '60s movie was led by two of our most accomplished stars. Song: chaa.nd kabhi thaa baa.nhoN mein phool bichhe the raahoN mein Movie: Sapan Suhaane (1961) Starring: Balraj Sahni, Geeta Bali Lyrics: Shailendra Singer: Sabita Chowdhury Statistics: 3 correct responses 29. tujhse shaayad ab na mil paaoon ronaa mat maa, jo naa ghar aaoon hai abhi baaqi, meraa imtehaan The song is addressed to Mother Country, and the movie is a tribute by a radical director to his long-lost friend and commander-in-chief. In another song from the same film, the maestro re-arranged a Bengali freedom call used by a certain nationalistic group in the '40s. A '60s song where the female voice puts in the usual high pitched harmonic performance with the male lead. These 2 singers have rarely been been featured together for Hindi cinema. Song: Janmabhoomi maa, maiN yahaaN tu wahaaN tujhse door, jaa rahaa maiN jaane kahaaN Movie: Netaji Subhashchandra Bose (1966) Starring: Abhi Bhattacharya, Jaimaala Director: Hemen Gupta Lyrics: Pradeep Singer: Hemanta Mukherji, Sabita Chowdhury Statistics: 1 correct response 30. do do mujhe to dekho paaras patthar chhoo gaye sonay ke, rang mein rangey, khwaab naye jhoome dil magan, jeene ki lagan, phir se mere man mein basee Salil it seems was not the only 'paaras pathhar' :-) Amol Palekar in this case has discovered two 'paaras pathhars'. Unless you are a true Amol Palekar fan, you probably only saw this movie because Doordarshan made you watch it. This song, a male solo, is unusual in that it (perhaps arguably) lacks the magical Salil touch that a typical Salil fan takes for granted. However, this latter-day movie did have couple of Lata gems. Song: Mil gayee achaanak mujhe har khushi Aa gaye meri baa.nhoN meiN do jahaaN Movie: Agni Pareeksha (1981) Starring: Amol Palekar, Rameshwari, Parikshit Sahni Lyrics: Yogesh Singer: Kishore Statistics: 1 correct response 31. Aa zaraa, haseen khayaal tu bun de zaraa Aa Aa zaraa, geet leher ke sun le zaraa.a.a.a ye samaa, madir hai, naiyaa na baandho re E ye samaa, tadap tere liye beet naa jaaye, Sun... Zaraa, sun zaraa bhai, sun zaraa bhai, sun zaraa..a.a.a. This movie, as we know it, appeared relatively late in the maestro's career. Not only is it a dubbed version of an utterly masterful '60s classic from another language, but also the stanza above uses a grand and popular Salil composition from the '60s. The song featured here is a chorus that utilizes a few up and coming voices from the late '70s. With that, the composer hails the next generation! Three different solo voices (Antara, Hariharan, Suresh Wadkar) join forces with the chorus. This clue has a 2-part question. a) You are required to guess the song, as usual. b) You are also required to identify the earlier Hindi song that has the same opening tune as the stanza shown. That earlier song has NOT been featured in this quiz. Hint for Part a: Some key words in the verse itself point to the movie (you have to know the existence of, and a lit- tle something more about the movie though). Hint for Part b: The meter of the verse written above should help identify the Hindi precursor, we hope. Each part carries 1 point. Song: Sun mitwaa re, sun matwaare, pawan jho.nka chalaa basanti aa zaraa, aa zaara Movie: Chemmeen Lehren (1980) Starring: Sathyan, Sheela, K. Sridharan Nayar Lyrics: Yogesh Singer: Antara Chowdhury, A. Hariharan, Suresh Wadkar, (Sabita Chowdhury??) Statistics: 10 correct responses 31B: Baagh meiN kali khili bagiyaa mehki (Chaand aur Sooraj) Statistics: 6 correct responses 32. Saajan mere aaye, dhaDkan baDhti Jaaye naina jhukte jaayein, aanchal Dhaltaa Jaaye mujhse yoon sharmaaye,....aaj meri parchhaai We seriously recommend every music fan in general, and Mukesh fans in particular to get this song. In an article posted on RMIM sometime back, Salil rated this as one of his favorite Mukesh songs. It reminds you of: chal ri sajani .... and sajanawa bairi ...
